I am re-building my 74 K5 in the driveway of the house I am renting. I am about half way thru this build and wanted to document it somehow. Here are some of the basics so far:
74 K5
Dana 60, and 14 bolt
ORD 4-link kit in the front
2004 Yukon xl 8.1 liter with 4l85 trans
NP205
DIY4X frame boxing kit
39.5" swampers on re-centered H1's

Here is a PIC of what it was from my first build.

Removing the Body

Here is how I removed the body. Kinda scary. Used two HF 2 ton cherry pickers. It will go on much safer. I built a beast of a gantry crane. More on that later. Pictures show the new wheels and tires.

Boxing the frame

My frame was pretty much wrecked, and I should have started with one that wasnt so f'd. My k5 has a salvage title and I found out why during my first build. It took a hit from the front passenger side. Looks like it was "fixed" at some point. I have boxed the frame starting at the tail end. If I would have started from the front , I would have looked for a better frame. Anyways, Kurt makes a nice kit that fits really well sorta. It wasnt perfect, but I blame my frame, and his kit has saved me a ton of time. Money well spent with the kit. I have finished boxing up to about the area of the old front rear spring mounts, and am still working on the very front section. I end up using my trailer, chains, straps and all the jacks I have to fix the front end back to straight enough for me. Here are some pics. You can see one of the down falls of building in your driveway with no cover. Weather delays.

Axle is built with brkts welded. Frame brkts are welded. I will post pics in the near future.

Motor and trans

Found the motor and trans on craigslist. Guy was swapping a duramax allison into his yukon xl, and had the old drivetrain for sale. Setup has about 70k on the clock. My plan is to install them pretty much as is. I picked up a gauge cluster from a 91 suburban so that I will have a speedometer that is compatible. I got the drive by wire pedal from the yukon, but the geometry of it is way different from the k5 pedal. My buddy picked up a pedal from a late 90s truck with 6.5 diesel. The pedal bolts up to the k5 and should work with the 8.1 setup. Also picked up a column with cruise from the 91 burb. Should be able to interface that with the 8.1 comp and have functioning cruise control. That will freak people out. I picked up a set of stainless ceramic coated 8.1 headers for 200 bucks shipped from edelbrock. They were clearencing them out. I am going to have to find a way to tweak them slightly to fit between the frame rails. More to come on that.

otslly watching this one closely...I really wanna see how the 4 link kit goes on and works for an average rental home driveway like you and myself. Plus an 8.1 BB and 40"s uhhhh god:woot:

Dana 60

Front axle is a GM 60 from an 86 truck. I tore it down and had the parts blasted, and then painted most parts. Most of the axle minus the housing was sitting on my kitchen table for about a year. Table is permanently bowed in the middle now. It is tough not having garage space. I picked up the ORD four link kit early this year. The axle brackets required a little work to get them to fit the axle. Most of the grinding was to the pumpkin on the passenger side. Castings changed over the years, so it wasnt a perfect fit. See the pic below to see what I removed on the pass side. I took the axle and brackets to Crane High Clearance to have them welded for a few different reasons. Mostly cause I was worried about welding to center section. ORD recomends welding for added strength. You could just bolt it to the center housing and then weld to the tubes and c. Crane is local for me, and they have a jig to hold the axle straight while welding. While they had it, I had them install 5.13 gears and a detroit. The first time I picked up the axle, I got it home and noticed all of the welds to the center section had cracked. See the pictures, and you will notice I also had them weld the tubes to the housing. Those welds cracked and the weld from the pass bracket to the center section all cracked. I took it back to Crane and they said this rarely happens and that they would fix it. They did fix it. For the record, they heat the axle with a torch and then mig weld everything. I hear of people using torch heat and then stick welding with a specific rod, so I was surprised. Also, I know of two other people that had Dana 60s straightened and tubes welded to center section by Crane without any cracks.

Cant get pictures to upload this evening. I will try again later.

Figured out how to link photos from photobucket

This first picture is of the pass bracket fitted to the axle. You can see how I had to grind the housing a bit. Had to also grind on the bracket to get it to sit right. No big deal, but they didnt just fall into place.

Here is the axle mostly assembled. I ended up picking up a diff cover from crane, but painted over the nasty looking green paint they use. A cool thing about the covers is that they are made at a foundry in Golden, CO. Used spicer u joints, and some off brand 35 spline stub shafts. Lockouts are Mile Marker. Guy at Crane said they break much less often than the Warn hubs, and they are cheaper. Anybody have any experience with the 35 spline mile markers? I have a PSC 1.75" ram mounted on the axle now but no pictures. All it needs now is calipers and pads.
