linked one ton escalade (coming back soon)

i wish i knew if a detroit locker from a dana 70HD would fit inside my dana 70 super. i have the detroit already, and i called yukon a couple weeks ago and they said the gears "should" work. probably should have just used a 14 bolt like a normal person would.

Pretty sure it will fit but what you will run into is then one of your axles will be too long and the other will be too short. The super 70 has a odd carrier offset. There is a guy on Pirate in the Dana 70 thread under the Chevy section that put an ARB in a super 70 in his van and had this problem. Might try and ask him what he did about it. GM uses a unique axle pattern that makes it hard to find different length 35 spline shafts for them since most GM full float axles are 30 spline.

thank you! i'll try to get a hold of him. hard to find people that know much about them at all. the guy at yukon didnt seem to lol

His user name on pirate is jolane. 645 is the post # in the Dana 70 thread where he talked about what he had to do. I think he had another thread where he was trying to find out what to do about it. I will look and see if I can find it.

This is a super 70 carrier. Supposedly the spider gears are offset 9/16" from a standard Dana 70. Makes the long side axle too long and the short side too short. I think he took 2 long side axles and cut 1/2" off of each one and added a spacer between the axle shaft and hub on the short side.

Stock axle length is supposed to be 37 & 3/16" on the long side and 35.75" on the short side.

awesome! it looks like i can make 2 long shafts work, and i just happen to have a couple of these axles laying around, so i might do that for now if i swap in the detroit.

edit: you beat me to it

Just watched some old extreme 4x4 episodes where they built a "budget" rock crawler for $10,800. i thought i was spending a lot on mine and wont have much more than that in it when its done.

I had a guy ask me if I really thought mine was worth 10k last night. It adds up quick! My 77 that I'm building is adding up way too fast. I passed the 10k mark a while ago. Anyway... this thing is pretty sweet. Keep up the good work and blah blah blah. Lol but really, good job man.

Shit my 81 had over $15k wrapped up with the Dana 60 swap being free on a trade. I ended up selling it for less than $4k.

So figured out a Dana 70S is basically a larger Dana 70 center section with 14 bolt outers.

So good news and bad news.

the bad news is, the escalade i was going to buy for the tow rig sold today and i forgot to bid.
the good news is, it didnt sell and they are relisting it.
the other good news is i sold my dodge for $11,500 more than i paid for it today.

and went and dug out the dana 70hd we had with a detroit locker.
thanks to @rksjd8420 and the info he found, i can use a regular dana 70 locker and 2 of the long side shafts from my dana 70S and i have 2 of those axles already and the detroit.

looking into the dana 70S a little more it looks exactly like the newer (1998ish?? and newer) 14 bolts from the axle tube out and has the same axle bolt pattern, but unlike the 14 bolt it still had a dana center section, which looks to be somewhere in between a 70 and 80. So finding an aftermarket axle wouldnt be easy. Hoping these dont break. i'll probably pick up a spare to keep with anyway.

I don't think that the bad news here comes anywhere close to keeping up with the good news!
I'm thinking that your nickname could be Barbie, cuz what a charmed life!

:rotfl:

Ok tell me where to go now.... I deserve it.

Ok, my ADD is back to the front axle, I sold some more junk squarebody parts so I have some extra escalade money. I was planning on using the lunchbox locker out of my escalade, but thinking about just ordering an ARB for the front. Is this a better option than a Detroit? It seems like Detroit rear and ARB front is a pretty common and bulletproof setup.
