Looking to buy 1974 K5

From what I can tell, everything looks original underneath...which should prove interesting to remove. The front springs are actually bent towards the ground, I suspect they are worn out or should they do that? The rear shocks have springs around them and look like they were built in 1974.

Somebody else mighta mentioned, but yes, the front springs were negative arched from the factory (umm, an upside-down U instead of U-shaped like the rears.) Now, they may also be worn (and if they're original, I'm sure they are) but they are supposed to be bent that way, fwiw.

I'm curious to see the rear shocks with the spring around them, that's new to me. Sounds like an aftermarket help spring, or maybe they're just weird shocks.

Alright fellas...been plugging away at the truck in my spare time. I've stepped back from the rust repair as it is beginning to get colder and I prefer to do that type of work outside. I'm working on servicing the brakes, diffs, hubs, transmission, engine, etc. My question is...what rear axle do I have here? I'm trying to determine if I have a limited slip or not...my guess is no, I do not as there are no springs or plates. The other photo is my tribute to Ryoken's green prep advice...I am listening.

Had to buy new drums as the old ones were probably the originals and had exceeded specs. I cleaned them thoroughly and sprayed some zinc chromate on them as a base prior to hitting them with some high temp black.

I think there is a stamping on the side of the ring gear...but I am not sure...

Did you find a tag or sticker in the glove box or door jamb that had the VIN code on it?
 
I read that a Limited Slip Differential test is to get both wheels off the ground....turn one wheel in a specific direction...if you have limited slip the other wheel will turn in the same direction....if you don't it will turn in the opposite direction


Admittedly, I know nothing about differentials...I've never been in one...at some point when I change the fluid in mine I will have a closer look at the inside...
 
I ran the VIN through the slosh website...didn't find how that info helped with the axles

There could be other RPO numbers that indicate what differential should be in there if it hasn't been changed...here are some of the codes

3.73 is a good ratio. 3.42's would probably be better for you, buy 3.73's will be just fine.

Yes...they are actually listed as "options", and preceded by the number 1
I have no reason to believe that my rear diff has ever been changed...but I guess you never really know till you look...
 
I was hoping someone could visually identify what's there but will definitely take a look at the options tag tomorrow. Thanks for the hint.

I looked and found the sticker you were referring to. It was in the glove box but a little worn out. The numbers are still readable so I'll reference them against the chart you posted and this website

Looks like you have gr4 as well. So 3.73 to 1 ratio like chief. Not a bad ratio. Good for 33 inch tires. I've seen a lot worse rust. That interior is gross but can be worked over. At least get a matching color on there. Lol

Thanks, I couldn't decipher the G code...that makes sense. The interior will take some serious TLC to get it back into shape. But right now, nothing is as bad as trying to get my rear brakes back together. Whoever the sadistic bastich is who created drum brakes should be shot down like a lame horse.:weapon2: Getting my butt kicked getting them back together. The good news is I'm doing one side at a time so I do have a reference.
 
It gets easier the more you do them. They work well for most situations but I like my disk brakes much better.
