LS Motor Build - wiring question

When I was referring to "open loop", I was talking about the first few minutes after starting my motor. I was surprised that it was so lean? Maybe that's why it seems to search for idle for the first few minutes? After warming up, it idles and cruises in the range that I would consider within spec. Not that I know much about this stuff... I'm learning as I go :-)

The second thing was wide WOT. I was referring to how rich it ran when I floored it.

It's an Innovative MTX-L wide band sensor. I'm currently only using it for monitoring the motor. The stock ECM has no connection to the sensor.

I hope to install the MS3 on the motor this weekend and get more into the "weeds" of tuning this thing. The motor is currently stock, but a little cam, heads and TPI are a short distance away. If this MS stuff works out, I'll use it to run my LS/4L80e combination that's going in next spring.

Sounds like a fun project. Will you use the "MegaShift" to run the 4L80E or somebody else's controller? I would like to follow along with someody doing that. So where is the WB sensor mounted?

Well, if the MS3 works out, I'll use the MicroSquirt to control the 4L80. Still not sure yet? I may just use the factory ECM with aftermarket harness?

I mounted the WB in the Thorley Y-pipe, about 6" after the two sides of the motor come together.

Blue85 - How do you like your Megasquirt? Was it hard to learn the ropes?

I'm happy I did the Megasquirt. I made a few changes to the engine setup along the way that I couldn't even have considered with something like a TPI ECU. My thread got kind of drawn out, but you can read it if you want: http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181264&highlight=custom+MPFI
It's been pretty reliable. I guess I've been driving it for 5 years now.

Most of the snags I ran into were not really the fault of Megasquirt.

1) When I had the HEI dizzy, the coil was controlled by the ECU directly and I burned out the ignition driver once. I also melted the rotor button once (I tuned the dwell for max current, of course), even though it lived for years with the HEI module. Then I went to a low resistance button. The HEI did work for a few years for me.

2) In my first days running the engine seemed "rpm limited", which turned out to be the mechanical assembly of the distributor. As the rpm increased, the ECU asked for more advance until the tip of the rotor actually moved past the brass terminal in the distributor cap (I had locked both mechanical and vacuum advance in the dizzy). By moving the dizzy over a tooth or two it began to work again. Not a big deal, but sometimes these problems aren't immediately apparent

3) My used injectors didn't seem to be very well matched, plus stock 22lb injectors are not that big so I eventually got some Ford Racing ones - 24lbs?

Some of the functions in Megasquirt seems "hidden" but at least everything is well documented (somewhere...). Don't even bother with MegaTune, but go for TunerStudio MS.

Motor in

After watching all of these LS motors being installed recently, I figured I better get on the ball and get my junk running with the 6L.

I pulled the old motor last weekend and installed the new motor and trans the following day. Installing the ORD crossmember with an empty engine bay was much nicer. I'm glad I was talked into getting the Holley oil pan as the clearance was tight even with the smaller pan. I don't think the stock one would have fit? The Dingo mounts are awesome! Nicely built and the adjustability is nice to have.

I'm hoping that this weekend is as productive as last. If I can get all the converter bolts, motor mounts bolts, H2O pump, PS pump, and other loose ends done this weekend, I'll be happy. I want next week to be headers (Thorley's) and exhaust, fuels system finished, and wiring started.

Question... on my intake I have the two fuel lines and a third line that goes from the EVAP(?) to something?? Where does the EVAP line end up?

New LS Swap Headers installed

I called Doug Thorley last Wednesday and ordered a set of their new LS headers made specifically for the Blazer. As usual, the headers are awesome and practically fall into place. It took 5 minutes to have both of them bolted up. They fit is great with no tubes coming within half an inch of the frame, firewall, shackle, etc. I was a little worried that I had positioned the motor a little to far back to help with the oil pan - ORD crossmember clearance, but it looks to be perfect.

did you have those custom made? I know for awhile there was talks about a production sef are theze them?

No, they're not custome made just for me. Thorley just came out with these for my generation Blazer (mine's a 1987) and I grabbed a set from the first production run.

I just sent Nick an email to see if he'll do a CK5.com discount. We'll see??

When I talked to Nick last week, he mentioned that they hadn't updated the website to show them as available. He did mention that he wish he had started building them earlier as he can't keep them in stock. I guess that's a good thing :-) Check back tomorrow and I'll let you know what he says about pricing.

I bought the BBC crossmember. I also have the Holley "conversion" oil pan which is smaller than the stock truck pan. Even with the smaller oil pan, I had to push the motor back some (dirty dingo mounts) to get it to clear the crossmember.

I found the Dirty Dingo motor mounts to be worth every penny. I could yank the motor back to front looking for the best spot for header, oil pan, ORD crossmember, PS pump, etc. clearance.

I looked at the Doug Thorly headers but heard they didn't fit. Tried to call them but never get ahold of anyone, did even call me back. So I got some from S&P with v clamp collectors fit good, very nice product. They where around $650.00 and you have to use aftermarket wires with 135 degree boots to clear the headers.

Teck,
These Thorley headers are a brand design set just for our generation Blazers. I called Thorley last summer and they told me they where working on getting some made, so I was kinda holding out for that. If they didn't come through soon, I was going to go the S&P route. They look like a nice piece of hardware.

BTW - I notice on your build that you have DBW. I'm going with a cable... do you know what Blazer/LS conversion people have been using for a throttle cable?

thanks!

No but I can ask the helping me with my wiring
I just got after Christmas I was trying to find out what they had but no one would call me back. I just figured they didnt care, do I called S&P

i used a lokar cable in my swap i think this is the right part number TC-1000LS1U there is another for the ls1 but i'm pretty sure thats the one i used

The Doug Thorley folks used my K-5 for fitting, and told me as soon as they went into prodution they would call me to install a set.
That was a few days after Christmas.

Cool
But they wouldn't even call me back and tell me they had some or not or working on them.
Bad customer service
