M1028- [under new management]

Lol, in no way dodo mean you didn't post on it. I meant its good it didn't go to someone that wouldn't be on here or sign up to keep the build thread going. Always really liked this rig :waytogo:

And yes start a thread on it

I know John will enjoy it and improve upon what I've always considered a pretty solid starting point.

It appears to be a very good build. I'm extremely happy with the truck. Realistically, if the subframe drop does what I think it will, I'm pretty much done with tinkering with it until I start wheeling it and start breaking it. I already know these trucks are never "done".

Oh, and I will replace the dash pad.

Guess now I should open an account on SCR lol.

Yes. Yes you should.

Dropped the carrier bearing subframe 1/2". Seems pretty much vibration-free at 60-65 now. Also, all of the vibration and noise on the torque arm bearings is gone with that bit of preload. I'm calling this truck done for now until after wheeling it a bit.

Heading to Canada tomorrow for a week of fishing, hope to get it out shortly after I return.

The tread blocks are pretty beefy on the Bajas. www.trailworthyfab.com said they have pretty good feedback on grooving them but they get $50 per tire. Bought a tire groover the other day on Ebay. Showed up today.

Getting started

First one done. I mimicked Trailworthyfab's design. Wedging the tire inside the rear fender and axle up against the spring hold it pretty well. You have to push pretty hard to get it to cut. I went about 1/8" short of the carcass.

The remains of two tires.

First two done and installed. It wasn't bad to do, bit of a push, though. All told it took about 1 1/2 hrs to pull, groove and reinstall two. I'll do the other two tomorrow.

I like that. I'm gunna have to do that to mine. Wonder how much of a difference it will make.

VERY cool! I'll bet the siping will help in the snow too, The only way I could do anything useful last winter was at 5 psi...

I may do some actual siping as well to improve packed snow/ice traction. The cutting blade in the groover can be flipped over so instead of cutting a \_/ it just cuts two single blade slots without removing any material. From what I read people do it on just the center lugs. Siping on the outer blocks would likely contribute to chunking.

Ah that makes sense. I didn't know if siping and grooving were the same thing.. so sipes are the tiny "no thickness" slots and obviously grooves are what you've done?

In any case, it looks a lot like the KM2s now if I'm thinking of the right BFG tire. So very cool ;)

Got the other two tires done tonight. Looking forward to a test drive tomorrow. Supposedly quieter on the road but I was already impressed how quiet the Bajas are anyway.

Going to Wichita for a trade show in two weeks so going to stop by trailworthyfab to pick up a spare wheel/tire. I'm going to be there with my truck anyway so might as well save on shipping.

Yeah, kinda sorta like that. In any case they should grip better on the rocks.
