Metal's LSx swap; Finally up and running!

Are you using a stock air intake and fan?

Stock clutch fan. Using an aftermarket air intake. 4" tubing, 90* out the TB.

I was going to grab a stock intake and put a cone on the end. However, people want crazy amounts for the stock intake. I got parts to build my own from intakehoses.com

They seem to be going for about $40 around here. Also just FYI, there was a dyno test of like 5 different aftermarket air intake setups on these motors. The best one iirc was with the stock air box with a drop in replacement performance filter and the airaid Jr intake tube. I think it was done on gmfullsize. Com. But I don't quite remember now.

Every one here plus ebay wants $150+. Most of the time the stock airbox does better than aftermarket. The resonators help a lot. With out then the sensors go crazy at certain RPMs and cause power loss.

I bought everything to make this intake for $120. That is the reason I went with it. Now I just have to figure out a way to make it fit with the mechanical fan.

Is it possible to trim the fan with no balance issues?

Probably. At this point it's worth a shot right? You might also be able to find a smaller diameter fan that still uses the thread on hub off something like an s10 pickup/van or even like a dodge Durango or something.

I did find a part number and called a company that had it and they wanted $180 for it! In the future im just going to source a longer clutch for the fan. In something like 96 or so almost everything that had a mechanical fan went to the same thread on style. So almost anything works on these motors. In my research, i found that IIRC, a 98 durango had everything correct and was around 1.5" longer. Just have to do some looking on rock auto for a fan clutch that has a longer snout.

So here is what one off a 02 silverado looks like,

VS one off a 98 E150 ford van.

So Im not sure thats the one for you, but im saying that there are options out there.

I was worried about running something from another vehicle due to rpm differences and what not. Is that a completely irrelevant concern?

fyi ls computers can do electric fans .

then a fan shroud from a windstar literly drops on with few mods .

I wanted mechanical for budget reasons.

Also, at this point I would have go send off my Pcm for a re-tune to run electric fans.

should of had them turn on fan controls in the reflash for later date use .

junk yard windstar fan unit under 20-30 bucks most the time .

I only do what I'm told... :dunno:

But did offer to reflash for the new fan settings if he paid the shipping! :D

I wasnt asserting any fault on my programmer (Eagle Mark) I was just neglagent in my asking of things to be programmed. I will get it to fire up and drive it up and down the block and see how it does before I send it back in.

Thanks for the offer :thumb:

I know guys . just stating a point for others in the event someone searches this and it helps them . :thumb:

reminds me I should send my pcm out to ya mark hope to have mine running soon . weather is getting warm . so I can finish the 2wd build.

Bout time! :haha:

I'll have to check the fan choice and see if I can set them all that way just in case there is a change. Would be nice if the PCM could be flashed and have both options available. in a case like this.. but would be bad if I did it and then a CEL was on because the electric fan was missing at first or CEL came on when elec fan was installed because of mechanical fan option being checked. I'm surely not going to experiment when the PCM is being mailed. It's all different if I have the vehicle sitting here with my hands on it! Can run all types of experiments then without any headaches in the end.

I don't know these 0411 LSx PCM inside out like the old 1227747 ECM that came in our old trucks. Don't know if I ever could! Your talking about a 4k program to a 512k program! :eek1:

FYI, I'm scheduled for surgery 4/15 and will be out of commission for awhile if you need anything done.

Got it about 95%!

Need to touch up the tops of a coue welds. Hard to reach and my stupid welder lead keeps pinching off the gas. Its going to sound pretty sweet.

I also am working on figuring out my TV cable. My 0-150 psi gauge isnt enough. Going to try and pick up a 0-300 gauge.
