Motor Swap - Complete!

When you install the intake manifold, don't use the end rubber gaskets. Instead add a good bead of RTV to each end.

Will do. Forgot to get intake gaskets, gotta grab some fel-pro ones tomorrow.

Too bad they aren't really reuseable, as they are only a few months old.

Wish someone local sold the Remflex Header gaskets. Mine are not really in shape to reuse, but i don't have them on hand :(
 
Anyone know the deal on this "GM core roundup"?

Its a new motor, so no core charge, but it sounds like they still want to refund me money for sending them a core.

I just got a form to apply for a core refund. Anyone know what the $$$ value is?
 
You could probably sell it on CL for $150 or so. You did WAY to much work to the motor in the truck! Its ok, just make for a sore back.

Just trying to figure out what the difference in $$ is between selling it and returning it to GM.

In terms of stripping the motor, i've been working evenings on it, and didn't want to get involved in pulling it yet. I plan to dress the new one with what i can before stabbing it in, but on this one, it makes better sense to pull it out bare.

By end of tomorrow night, it should be all ready to yank on Saturday morning.

Debating if i put the header on before or after the install. Gotta decide how hard the motor mounts are to get to. If the headers stay off, so does the PS. Hmmm...
 
Before. For sure. Motor mounts are still wide open with them on.

If thats the case, i have lots of stuff to bolt on this motor before it goes in :eek1:

But, beats doing it in the truck!

Thanks for the advise, will do it that way.

Tonight, i drain the oil, pull the oil cooler lines, pull the intake, disconnect the Torque Converter, bellhousing bolts, and ready the motor mounts.

Then the intake goes on the new one, along with everything else. All front accessories, headers.

Gotta pull the TBI apart too, and install the new injectors.
Ready for swap in the morning. :D
 
I wouldn't have even messed with the exhaust.

pull the bolts out of the heads.... let the pipes and manifolds drop down....
pull the motor.... :dunno::dunno:

I agree... way to much work in the truck....
makes my back hurt thinking about it... :D
 
Between using a stool, and sitting on the core support, i'm really not hurting that much, haha.

But, it went pretty fast. Only have about 4 hrs into it so far.

That being said, my manifold to ypipe connections needed to be resealed, and my ypipe to exhaust connection was leaking like crazy. Ordered Remflex gaskets for everything.

May not be the quickest way, but it will work!
 
Just a thought, but when I R/R the engine in my 86 F-250, I pulled the bumper, grill, core support and radiator out of the truck so I didn't have to raise the engine too high. It made it a lot easier to just lift it enough to clear the mounts.

It might be more than you want to do but it made access to the engine bay a lot easier too. I could stand up and do all my odds and ends and not have to hunch over the front of the truck.

Thanks for the suggestion. That idea has been suggested before, but i think i'm going to keep the core support in. Its a lot of stuff i haven't removed before, and although not difficult, is just more to do. Plus, I have all sorts of electrical crap mounted to my core support that I'd rather not take apart.

Considering that my swap is just a replacement, and no special work should be needed on the motor, I really plan to have most of the bolt on's installed before dropping it in.

Plus, my truck is more or less stock height, and if i need a couple inches, i'll take the front wheels off and drop it down on stands.

Going to keep the chain short, and think i'll have the clearance i need.

We shall see!
 
Are you replacing your motor mounts? It is a good time to do it obviously (give them a coat of paint before they go in).
I used the Remflex gaskets once - once. They sealed well, but I did not like that they really fell apart when I had to pull the headers off once. Now I use the fel-pro copper gaskets and they work great. They cost about the same as remflex, but are fully reusable and seal perfect. They also install easy and you don't have to wory about crushing them.
I never installed my headers prior to dropping the block, just too much bulk to keep track of. I found it easy to install the headers from underneath the truck.
A couple items that you absolutly need to install prior to dropping in are the cruise controll bracket etc that bolt on to the rear of the heads.

Ive had good luck with the set of remflex i have, but yes, not very reuseable. Hence me putting a new set on now.

Definitely have new motor mounts going in!
 
I agree pulling the core support makes dropping tye motor in easier, but very far from needed. I have donesomething in the neihgborhood of of a dozen motor swaps in these trucks and never pulled the support.
 
I was at a junk yard the other day picking up a few items,,, I needed a set of door hinges off an old 80's model chevy truck.....

To get at some of the bolts on the hinge requires getting under the dash and it's tough to get at the bolts behind the lip of the fenders...besides I was dressed in my office clothes and wasn't about to crawl under a truck..

any way,,,, these two mexican guys that work there rolled up with a truck and a small box of tools and a battery powered impact.....

With in 10 minutes they had the entire front clip, including the hood and cowl support and inner fenders, sitting on the ground. 5 minutes more they had both doors off and were handing me the hinges....

I guess when you do that kinda of stuff everyday,,,,you know exactly which bolts to pull and in what sequence.... :waytogo:
 
Its out! No hood, core support in. Pretty easy, actually. I was surprised. Now moving stuff over to the new block, and reassembly.
