My 1990 K5 Blazer build

Well, I got in the truck today after a big rainstorm and the thing smelled all funky musty. I didn't see any leaks in the front, but the carpet in the back by the tailgate is SOAKING wet. Gotta find that leak. I may take the carpet out in the back and spray some bedliner in there. Keep it from rusting and get rid of the funky smell at the same time.

And another problem, I started noticing a gear oil smell from the rear when I got out of the truck. Well, last night I noticed when turning sharp the rear axle was kind of grinding and kind of dragging one tire, almost like it had a spool in it. This morning I drove it around and noticed that occasionally when turning the rearend would clunk as it popped in and out of lock. I'm guessing the posi is on it's way out, or so it would seem. I'm going to change the fluid in it today and see what it looks like inside of there. Hoping for the best, I don't have the money to replace a rear axle.

Well, I dropped the cover and changed the rearend fluid, but didn't see anything wrong in there. The posi unit looks good and there were no metal shavings or anything. I did check and I do have 4.56 gears in the back though.

Still wondering about that carrier hanging up, really weird. Let's hope it doesn't die on me.

That definitely doesn't sound good. Any idea what posi is in it?

Not sure, I didn't really look for what kind it was and don't really know how to tell from the design. Should have taken a picture, but was in a hurry.

Without pics it could be anything...especially since it's had 4.56's installed. It does sound like classic Gov-Bomb symptoms though.

Did it look like this?

Yep, that's it.

I drove it around a bit today, didn't give me any real issues. I got one clunk backing out of a parking space, but didn't act as bad as it had before. Maybe the fluid change helped a bit. It just needs to make it till May when I graduate, after that I can afford to put a 14-bolt in the back.

It might last til May, or it might not last the next 5 miles. I had one not give me any issues, then trying to back out of a parking spot it blew chunks through the cover...

That's why they get called the "Gov-bomb". It will blow up, you just don't get to know how long the fuse is.

So I need to carry a 7/16" wrench with me in case I need to pull the driveshaft so I can get home using the front wheel drive? :haha:

I really hope it lasts, or if it does go that it doesn't destroy too much. :(

You probably also need to put in a slip yoke eliminator tail shaft housing on your t-case so the driveshaft doesn't fall out on the way home. You might be able to strap the driveshaft up & in somehow, but...

When it goes, because of your differing gear ratios, your stuck.

Later,
Buddy

Nah, just take the whole thing out and rubber glove the tailshaft. :)

I have the new gears, just haven't put them in yet. Maybe this weekend.

Well, this rear axle is really starting to make a racket. I'm going to go to the junkyard next week and see if I can find either a 6-lug 14-bolt or a new posi unit.

just throw an open dif in their, you wont have any of the problems.

Guess it depends on what you want to do with it as far as wheeling. In the sand I had no problems with an open dif, but idk what kinda wheelin you would do.

It would just be cheaper, easier to find, and less headaches down the road.

Well, a friend of mine gave me a 14bsf rear axle. I need to put 8-lug wheels on my rig, but wasn't crazy about the wheels on it anyway.

I got a line on a 3rd row rear seat for a Tahoe, going to try and swap my rear seat out for this so my boys will have seatbelts if I take the top off.
