My 5.3 swap thread!

Yea we'll find out for sure as i reverse all the stuff that i did and start it between each thing. For now im just happy that it wasnt the trans!

Aaaaaah. You had the MAF right in front of the throttle body and the fan blowing into it didn't you... :doah:

I did initially. Im curious to put the fan back on and run it again now that i have repaired the one not so great ground going to the computer.

das perdy... now for a question... only informational as im looking at the conversion myself... why not the 6.0?

i have a 5.3 in my '08 crew cab and love it... 20.75mpg (@60mph in a 65!!!!!)

Looks tidy. :thumb:

It runs good now?

Thanks! Yea It's good to go. I guess it was that one bad ground.

Cost was the reason for not going 6.0. I think in the future I'm going to put this motor in the blazer and stick an lq9 in this thing. Or maybe a ls3 or something cool. I'm hoping this one gets 15 hiway but not holding my breath.

Looks like it came from the factory!
Beautiful

Thanks! Not quite done yet tho. But that is what I'm shooting for!

well congrats on the swap.. whatever you swap to is better...

now if the 5.3 shuts down like it does in my 08... you have to find the highway sweetspot and i think youll be ok...

i priced a 5.3 and 6.0 locally and there were no differences... that is why i asked...

Mine doesnt have the displacement on demand stuff. The 5.3's and 6.0's vary in price quite a bit around these parts! The 5.3 is still about 100hp and 35lb.ft more then the tbi 350. Anyway i picked up a light to wire into my alternator wiring to see if it will start charging.

hows it going? I'm still on the fence, got my tax return and two engines on craigslist, rebuilt tbi 350 long block for 950 and a 5.3 with 60k with engine and harness for 850.

Depends, do you want a.motor that would be marginally powered in geo or do you want something a little more suited towards a full sized truck with a modern fuel injection and computer? For me, the few hundred extra over a rebuilt 350 was no big deal for the gain I got overall.

Anyway, It's really been a pretty easy swap. It would be easier if I cared less about trying to male it look factory. On the flip side, the 350 that was in it before the last one last 220k miles and pulled a well of a lot of loads and ran good pretty well all the time. It's just that I remember so many times thinking, "this thing is one underpowered pig!" I remember passing people and thinking, "truck, you better get a move on and at least pretend like you want to pass before we run out of room!" I also remember when i had the 36's on and in low range in the mud the motor wouldn't even spin the tires fast enough to clean them in reverse. I remember thinking, "seriously? Low range and you can't even get the rpm up in this slick not deep mud?" Another time that sells me on the 5.3 is a long story but to make it short, me and another guy had to get up to an emergency real fast out in the country. Me in my burb, him in his 02 3/4 ton stock 6.0 truck. At the time I thought my 350 had a bit of power. Watching him pull away from me at that rate when i had my foot burried in the floor was enough for me. I remember hitting the top of 2nd gear watching the needle climb ever so slowly as he was an easy football field ahead. We started at the same dead stop...

dude you are a good salesman!! No but really, I do agree and plan the same swap or maybe a 6.0n in mine, when I get the money, of course. The TBI 350 is old news and not worth the money at all.

So I hadn't even thought of the local wrecking yard who pulls and stocks all their engines in their warehouse, I thought they would be too pricey. But I looked and I could get a 2002 5.3 out of an avalanche with 80k for 750 with a 6month warranty... now that sounds much more appealing to me. Just means I would have to get it running quick before the 6 months runs out :doah:

make sure you check to see what it comes with. when I checked those places out, that price was for engine only. no wires, accessories, etc... all the stuff you'd need for a swap.

What ash said. The bright side is that a harness can be had for about $120 on eBay all day and a computer also on eBay go for about $80. But it will probably also be missing alternater amd o2 sensors which will be another $150-250. But again on the bright side, you will still only have $1200iah into your awesome motor.

right that is why you find a local yard.. with it all still in truck...
and get all pieces at once.. i was going to get harness, ecm and drive by wire units at first.. then motor.. but id rather get everything from the same truck...

im gonna hold off getting anything cuz i also want a new manual trans.. if im gonna have to spend $500 to adapt my trans to the motor.. might as well get say a 2005 6.0L mated to the manual 5 speed... and pay an extra $300....(i made the phone call)...

guy said $1100 for motor, harness, ecm, drive by wire unit, $800 for trans... of course then trying to figure out how to get a np205 to it...
