My 5.3 swap thread!

Looks good! I can't blame you there. As said above Murphy will get ya. Any thoughts on a patch panel? I'll bet you can find a nice piece of flat rubber and cut it to make a "gasket" or just silicone it up if you want... Crap just leave it open! I hear that's how some folks get around "open container" :doah:

LOL! I plan on finding a parting pickup on CL and cutting a section of bed floor out of it. Take it about 3" bigger then the current hole. I plan on sealing it with silicone of some type.

Tomorrow(today) the fuel pump is going to be swapped and done. I might have some stuff going on in the afternoon but one way or another the exhaust will also get done this weekend. So, few things this week then should be good to go for a test start next weekend.

Fuel pump done. Little FYI on the fuel pump, It's not quite as drop in as an original. There are two little ears on the bottom that need trimmed off and the fuel outlet is only 5/16 where as the steel line on the sending unit is 3/8". Other then that it was no problem. Now on to the exhaust.

I cut the exact same hole in mine, and still happy about it. I dropped the tank once before with the stock single exhaust and 1/2 tank. Then again later with dual exhaust and about 1/2 tank again... that sucked. I ain't dropping that 40 gallon SOB anymore!

Yea for sure. Yea it only takes a couple hours to drop a tank and swap the pump and put the tank back up, but now i can do it in less then 30 minutes. Worth it!

I forgot to mention, I made flanges for the stock metal I cut out so that the panel would overlap the hole. I sealed it up with that tar tape stuff used to seal evaporator cases. It's very strong.

Sold the old motor today. Again, bitter sweet. In the end i gave the guy a full disclosure but it sounds like he is just going to drop it in as is. Really hope it works out for him. Got $250 for it.

Better to get something for it then just having it set around. More money to help with this project.

Me too! It's going to be next weekend. I just have had a tough time getting motivated to wake up before work and go out in the 35* garage. Especially cause last week we had a hellatious east wind which happens to be the side my garage door opens up. Just chills you instantly and makes you think, I could be in the house drinking coffee and watching tv in my pajamas!

Took a break from the burb today and went up to the mountain and played in the snow. Pretty fun to get out and enjoy owning a truck.

Your truck has chains on it but the car next to you does not?

I've never been in a situation where I needed snow shains, just thought that was strange.

The car next to me should have had chains on. I know i didn't need them but i had them and they are the cheap kind that only take about 5 min to put on. The road up there was crazy slick. I have really good snow tires on there and on the way up in 2wd the rear end just started spinning the tires out of the blue. So I figured screw it. Toss the chains on real fast and forget about it.

Took the day off work today to get some work done on this thing. I think by the end of the night it will be pretty well ready to start. I'm waiting on the guy I got the motor from to send me knock sensors and harness as the ones that came with this motor were not ok. They should be here Wednesday. So i think i will just be over prepared for the test fire this weekend.

$5 drill pump from harbor frieght and I just pumped the gas into the two other cars I have. With a drill pump it takes about 5 min to empty a full tank. It would agree it would suck to do on the trail but I'd probably tow myself out anyway.

Best of luck..... I thought about doing the 5.3 swap but a friend of mine at work has a newer truck with 5.3L and tows a boat and said the thing hunts gears while towing. It's the same problem my old motor had. So the other option I could have done was the 6.0L but I chose to just do a 383 instead. But I do like the idea of using much newer technology!

Sounds like you have a fun project.

Or i could just pull off my access panel and not mess with it. \

The 5.3 is 100hp and 35lb.ft increase over the stock tbi 350. I think it should be a significant increase. Dont think the th400 will ever hunt unless im pulling a big load on a big hill.
