My 86 K5 build

Then built a bucket to protect my 241 (biggest reason why I went to all this work so I didn't smash the aluminum tcase on a rock.

Great idea. That and proper length drive shafts will save a lot of broken 241's & 208's.

True. Luckily I spent a pretty penny a few years ago on my rear shaft and got really lucky with a good buddy who sold me his long slip full 1350 front driveshaft, so I should be good to go on that front :thumb:

I ended up buying an after market shifter. Had to come up with an idea to mount it. I used my left over 1" tubing I was using for my bracing on the cage and some 1/8" steel to build a really simple platform.

And yes I did round off all the corners so it didn't stab anyone

. This thing is simply bolted to the floor. It is surprisingly stable. heck of a lot more stable than the factory center consul.

Finished, painted and shifter installed

I plan to get a cable shifter for my NP241 and mount it right next to the tranny shifter to get rid of the factory one that loves to bind up. I will also mount up a winch control, maybe some auxiliary lights, and who knows, maybe some cup holders too. We will see what I come up with

You'll like having that floor shifter.

I went back and forth on it. For a while I didn't understand why people wanted them, I thought the column shifter was just fine, but now that I have it....it just makes the rig so much more fun to drive :D. I also cut out 2 gates on the shifter so I can go from 1st to reverse a whole heck of a lot faster. It's really nice

This......I want

That's a big fear of mine, not catching reverse fast enough.

Yeah, I had thought about that too with the stock shifter. And it was a factor in doing it, but the biggest thing is it was like playing plinko on this shifter to freaking go from 1st to reverse, so annoying. Now it's like butter :D. A TH350 or 400 probably wouldn't be that bad, but with the 4 gears of a 700r4, it was annoying

Question...I've been thinking hard on this....is that lower base of the shifter necessary? Seems awfully bulky.

Thanks
Mike

nice job.

I assume those shifters have some sort of linkage kit for the trans side correct?

You need some sort of lower base to mount it somewhere. Most places have different options for a base that are a little more slim. I truly don't think this normal base is that bulky at all. That's just me though

Yeah, the kit came with everything. The shifter, the base, cable, and all mounting hardware to hook it up to the tranny. Was real easy

just caught up on your build youve been busy ,everything looks great ,i should be ready to bring mine out in about a month i will be ready to beat on it again

Small update. First is I finally mounted a fire extinguisher instead of letting it roll around in the back. Purchased a weld on mount from DIY4x. I must say, especially for the money, this thing is really cool

This is with my truck tailgate closed. Plenty of room

I also decided to move my front axle forward a little more. My tire was still getting into my wheel well a little when it was really stuffed, and to get things set up for bigger tires eventually (not anytime too soon, but I have plans to go bigger).

Moved my springs to the most forward hole of the b52's

New shackle angle. still pretty good if you ask me (and this is still in the stock location)

And when I moved the axle forward more, I really need to shim the axle cause it was too much of an angle on the front pinion. So got some 4* shims from DIY4x too

Angle on the front shaft looks good now

And this is where my axle sits now. I am guessing it's about 3" forward from stock now, give or take

Is this thing offroad only or does it see some street use too? If it sees any street use then you should really be more concerned with caster than with pinion angle. A great pinion angle is usually not a great caster number but again more important for street use. I know you trailer this most of the time but wasn't sure if its still going to be on the road too.

Its offroad only. Its not street legal at all. So all I care about is the front shaft not binding while flexed.

so.......about that rear stretch:whistle:

I will just copy/paste what I just wrote on my pirate thread :D
"I will probably leave the rear alone until I go to a bigger tire, and even then, I may just use the ez inch i currently have back there and only move it 1" back (rear axle is in the stock location right now). I really don't want to mess with my rear shaft....I purchased that one about 2 years ago and it was really expensive, would rather not dick too much with it. I think I could handle 1" with it, but not much more."

Retubing is cheap. The money is in the wear parts (u-joints, slips shafts, yokes).
