Get to go on land at all? Heard it's beautiful. You also might get to see some of our big hardware flying around. Often used as a bomber and transport base for it's central location.
Yup I'm a merchant marine and an academy guy too. Ya I get to get off and the island has some cool stuff and plenty of cheap beer. Definately very beautiful here and some crazy amount of BIG fish too. I see planes from time to time but mostly just the transport planes that I came in on.
There's some wheeling there if you know the right people and places. Years ago I was on another Chevy forum and we had an occasional member there. Had a IFS Chevy fullsize on 33's with hacked fenders. Said most of the locals drove Japanese trucks but there was a strong following for American stuff...obviously.

Diego Garcia, eh? I wanted to get stationed out there from the first time I heard of it. I spent a year on Johnston Atoll and loved it. Diego Garcia was the next island on the list I wanted to see, then I went aviation and lost all hope of that.

We had a chem weapons disposal facility there from the mid 80s/early 90s until 2001 or so. I got to see lots of VX and lewisite while I was there.
The island has been razed(sp?) and it now just there for the birds. I wouldn't be surprised if 3 winged and 8 eyed Blue Footed Boobies or Greater Frigate birds or Terns show up in the Mid Pacific sometime.

I was on Johnston Atoll in '98 or '99 to do the Hull inspections of the Mike boats. Army divers, Navy NDT (ME).

Did you come out from HI? I was there Oct 99-Oct00. I remember a group of divers out there imspecting our warf and some other stuff.

The one thing about Diego Garcia that I am starting to realize is that all you see are the same people and now that I've been here almost a month I've done everything the island has to offer. I'm not complaining as I could be in much worse places but the one thing this island is missing is girls...
Back in the States!!
Ok it's great to be back in the states again!! But more importantly, I picked up the truck today!! The body work came out beautifully. Very quality work and very detailed. The bed is imaculate, the fender is perfect, and my windshield frame is solid again! They left the sun visor off which is great because just driving around today I noticed easier highway cruising/acceleration. I think I may just leave it off and benefit from the milage. On the other hand I have noticed that the new 14b being a little wider has reduced my turning radius so parking is a little harder than usual. Pics to come!!
