My Wife gave in...I got my Avalanche

Well I gotta chime in............too much fun!

IFS is what the mainstream wants - a Cadillac riding 'truck'. Fact.

SFA will not be back with GM in my opinion.

Azteks are the ugliest vehicle........since...........well, they are the ugliest ever. IN MY OPINION.

Avalanches are the second ugliest vehicle ever. IN MY OPINION. I used to think when the Dodge came out a few years ago that is was ugly. I now like them. Maybe the Avalanche will grow on me/us. Doubt it.

GM is blowing it. Camaro is going away, Impala is a freakin' joke and they just don't have a clue. GM has been going down the tubes for a decade. They come up with a 454SS truck that was ugly, crappy wheels, etc. Ford responds (granted, late as usual) with the Lightning, a bada$$ truck. GM had the Syclone/Typhoon and stopped producing them. I'd give my right nut to own a Typhoon as a daily driver. Shall we go into the Impala SS that was the best full size sedan EVER and they did away with it........? Nah.

Wish we had an email addy for the design/management of the Chevy division.

Stimpy, good for you. You got a vehicle that we will probably all like at some point. Our current opinion notwithstanding.

Frank, don't forget one truck GM made the right decision on: The ZR-2.

Good point. Must have been a skunkworks division............didn't it have a different frame than the normal Blazer?

Oh, and one other good job...........the AWD Astro/Safari vans. I am dead serious. We have owned a 93 since new and just bought another brand new 2001 for the wife, SLT model with tow package, 3.73 axle and locking rear. Best damn vehicle we have owned..........and that AWD is for real. Never have stuck it down at the beach. Selling the '93 now...........put 117K on it with very little problems.

I'm not real sure on the frames. I'm not much of an S-10 man. Now that I have seen those ZR-2's everywhere, I have to have one!!!
tongue.gif

I would imagine the frames are the same. Just the suspension is different. Kind of like the Z-71's and full size trucks. Pretty much the same, except for the suspension packages. Still, I'm not 100% sure on the S-10 frames.

I will take your word on the Safari any day!!!
laugh.gif

My wife's parents had a Safari with the little V-6 in it and every time I got a chance to drive that thing, we would go down town and I would drop the tranny into first gear and then stomp on the gas, off and on, to get the van jumping up and down. MAN!!! That thing had POWER!!! It would jump the front up and down about a good foot or so!!!
cool.gif

We had lots of fun in that van! Unfortunately, it racked up the miles and parts started to break or wear out. So, her parents bought a newer Crown Victoria with the V-8 in it. I have not had a chance to drive that car yet, but her dad says it has BALLS!!!

I never said that the Avalanche was the best looking truck out there....But the guy bought a truck he had his heart and mind set on and he was slammed.....He didnt post this thread to ask your opinion.....Now if he would have said....What do you think of the Avalanche...Then he would have opened it up for ridicule.....Im not a saint by no means....I have an opinion on everything....Thats what my wife says anyway....I remember a month or so ago "Grim" posted a thread asking the people on here to be selective on their thoughts when it comes to getting personal.....this thread is border line.....The negitive threads may have turned away a potential "Colorado K5" Member away......My last thought on this topic is......

This is one of those times where we should have said "congrats"....and kept the negitive thoughts to ourselves unless he said " I was thinking about buying an avalanche, what do you guys Think? Im out

GM sells thousands of trucks a day. I would say that off-roaders are a very small percentage of sales. I have studied the IFS on my 2500 suburban and it looks beefy enough to handle anything I would through at it. Oh yeah, it rides like a Cadillac too. If some day down the road I want a SFA then I'll put one in it, people are doing it every day. For now if you want a solid front, buy something from the 70's or 80's.
Personally, I don't care for the looks of the avalanche. Living in Detroit, I see a lot of vehicles on the road that haven't been released yet. When I saw an avalanche with manufacturer plates a while back I was like "what the hell is that?" But, if someone likes the looks of them, and just got a new one, then congratulations. I don't remember GM ever offering a 3/4 ton K5.
Hey K30, the ZR2's have the same frame, just longer A arms and a wider rear axle.

I kind of figured they would have the same frames.

with the billions of Trucks that GM puts out every minute, it would make little sense to use a different frame, if they can just bolt a different body onto it... thats why my suburban frame and fleetside longbed frame were the same, except for 1 or 2 mount locations, with the rivet holes for the other mounts. its also why doors, fenders, windows, axles, and everything else is completely interchangeable. why waste money on retooling for something you want to have a family resemblance anyway?

I still stick with my thoughts that the avalanche is a cool truck, in need of an aftermarket Diamond plate plastic replacement kit. whoever said those who like the avalanche are unoriginal, and going with the crowd seme to have forgotten that there's like a 4 to 1 hate rating against the avalanche, and those of us who say its cool are kinda in the minority, NON group setting.

the IFS is quite strong on the newer trucks, as my neighbor who's been known to shred new D44's, owns a 98 tahoe with the IFS, and hasn't managed to kill that. not only that, but he's put 97,000 miles on it from driving to and from work, and with exception of the tranny starting to go out, its been prolem free. after he gets a new transmission, and his 100,000 mile warranty expires, he does plan to put a D44/D60 under the front, and lift it several inches ( at least a foot) and roll it with 44's.

I've actually thought about doing an IFS 4 wheel drive swap onto my 2wd C20 suburban, but decided against it. I like the ride as it sits just fine, and to screw with that any more could be a Bad Thing. my C20 does ride like a cadillac, which is why I keep it the way it is. when I don't mind compressing my spine, and want to look big, scarry, or go off road, I have the K20, which rides like a bloated tank. ( putting the 454 in it, ought to help the front springs feel more mushy)

as has been pointed out, we really are the minority. of all the people I know, (we'll call it 500, to be safe) I only know a handfull in person who like to tinker with cars, and do extreme 4 wheeling. this board is the exception, and within its sheltered confines, its easy to forget that the rest of the world is stupid about not putting D60's or rockwells in everything. what would you say if I told you I was going to get a Nissan pickup with a 4 cylendar/5 speed as a daily driver? ( driving 400 miles in a week really cuts into the spending money when you only get 8-13 MPG) unless I can find a good overdrive, or manufacture an overdrive that'll allow me to get affordable mileage on the road, I probably will be getting a lil truck.

Congratulations on the new truck Stimpy!! Don't let these guys get you down with all their negativity! Some people are just too hardheaded to just compliment you on the new purchase, especially since you told all of us that it was your dream to own one! I won't even get into all the nonsense that has started on this thread. I think the Avalanche is a great design, very functional, individual (no one else has anything close), uses tried and true parts/drivetrain (yes guys, the IFS works perfectly for the people who buy GM SUVS/Trucks - remember, over 95% of new buyers never go off road, so what they want is a smooth riding and good handling truck!) I love the new styling on the front end, and the overall styling is very nice - but I do honestly think that the plastic sides are the least attractive part. Now, a friend over at Steel Horse Automotive just bought an Avalanche, and he has had the plastic "fender flares" painted to match the rest of the truck, it looks awesome! And I saw an Avalanche that was lifted probably about 6 inches, had 35s on it, it looked awesome!! My friend's truck will be at SEMA in two weeks in the Steel Horse booth, so I will try to get a picture of it and send it to you! He has a 6" lift from Fabtech being installed right now, and is doing 35s on it, it should look sweet!!

So, again, congratulations on getting your dream truck, and I say great choice!! Enjoy the Avalanche and show us pics of whatever you do to it!

Hey, I'm just trying to be honest...
I personally happen to think the Avalanche looks like puke. I'm not singling him out.

Call me a Jarhead if you want. Just keep in mind that as you defend his right to like the Avalanche, it is our right not to like it.

Still Poundin' "pavment" after all these years!!!

Amen Red Dwarf! I never made any personal slams or remarks about Stimpy...but I will not say the Avalanche is cool cuz he bought one. I still don't like it. Thats my opinion.

You guys are missing the point - Stimpy didn't say "Hey look guys, I just bought my dream truck, please tell me you think it looks like puke"!! Can't you just compliment the guy on his new purchase and save your derogatory remarks for someone who is asking your opinion?? You don't always have to interject your opinions, do you? I mean, once in a while can't you just say "Yeah, that's great for ya" and leave out the part about how you hate this or that, or it looks like hell??? That's all were saying here in Stimpy's defense...yes, everyone has the right to like/dislike, but can't y'all just say you're happy for the guy and leave it at that??

Just a note to add to the conversation. Next year they are going to offer a 3/4 ton Avalanch. At least the drivetrain will get better. Cant say much for the stying though. Lots a REALLY neats ideas, but just so darn ugly.

I know what you mean by the thread, but you have to know the difference between saying, "The Avalanche looks like crap!" and then the saying, "I think the Avalanche looks like crap!". There is a big difference there.
wink.gif

Whether Stimpy was asking for our opinion or not, NOBODY said the Avalanche looks like crap. Some (most) people said they THOUGHT they look like crap.

Its all about opinions and how they are spoken.

Todd,
I know you will love the motor and drive of that thing, i just bought an '02 Sierra with the 5.3. I would drive a giant tupperware with fruit salad still sticking to it with that motor, it's that good! Enjoy!

The Avalanche is similar (but not as UGLY) to the Aztec. Love it or Hate it, most everyone has an opinion of it, and it is usually strong, I have not heard anyone say "the Avalanche/Aztec is okay".
I have not seen one person slam him for buying it, most like myself that does not care for it has congratulated him for getting the truck that he wanted and really liked. And no one tried to get him to take it back to the dealership.

And the car dealers produce what they want, not what the consumer wants. If you want a new car you must buy what they have to sale.

My wife is looking at getting a new small suv, and I told her it must have a 6 cylander and preferably made in the US. She really likes the heep Liberty and furd Escape/Tribute and isuzu's. Now these are not what I would go buy, but it is not for me and I will drive it seldom. She is short and used to smaller vehicles so a Tahoe or similar size is "too big" for her (she will not try to drive one, even though I have pleaded with her to). I know most people on here would have horrible things to say about these vehicles, but she will only use it on the street, it will be her car and she MUST be comfortable w/ the size/ride, and not what other people think about it.

Good lord. The rod up that man's butt must have a rod up it's butt.

Right. In other words, as long as someone is happy with it, fine. It does not matter if anybody else is happy or not, but the sole owner, whom is making the payments and driving it.
