Not so budget anymore 454 build

I think you can use the stock crank assy. with the flywheel and dampner that it has been run with, and those themselves wouldn't necessarily need a re-balance. Scott (4x4high) would know for sure, but I think the rods/pistons are balanced as units, but also play into the total reciprocating mass that includes the counter weights on the crankshaft.
So if I'm correct, and your close to the stock weight that was on the crank, with the new parts, you may be ok, up to a point.....I would think your machinist would guide you on this, but I would be surprised if he doesn't want to balance the whole assy to be sure if your running it up to 6K.

"I can't to put it back together :D :D"

I guess not, your so excited you can't even write what your thinking straight.....I've been there, and I just call it geeked!:D

I think I'm going to end using the flywheel and dampener already on the engine. Maybe a new dampener, I don't think that would throw off the balance, I'll have to ask. I have even seen arguments made as to whether or not you really even need to balance an engine also, it does seem like a good idea though.

I'm not sure about the 6k, that would be the absolute max, 5500 would probably be as high I would want to go.

I always leave the most important words out :haha:. The big block with open headers will be music to my ears. :D

At least it won't really be a "budget" build anymore, All decent quality parts going into it now, and hopefully I don't need to worry about anything.

I forgot to mention I made all the money for this engine selling vette parts :D

After getting back and town and talking to him again, he seems quite incompetent now. He must have been in a good mood when I talked to him last lol.

I don't really want to have to rely on him to do much. Just boring and decking my block, and polishing the crank.

I think I may just buy these heads

By the time I get some cast iron heads and do what I want to them I will only be a few hundred off the price of these, and these will be better. Plus quite honestly it doesn't seem to be worth the hassle of dealing with him.

I've heard of people being really happy with these heads and people complaining. I've seen any complaining about BBC heads though.

These things are monsters and I would be into the 600 hp area.

It will definitely take a while longer to get the money but I think it will be worth it in the long run.

I guess I don't need anything, just always looking. I pretty much replaced everything that needed it about 10-15 years ago, and it surely isn't worn out at this point.
Those glovebox doors you can replace the aluminum, with a kit, makes em look really good. Is the outer (black frame) dented at all?

Yeah thats why all those parts are there my dad has just been replacing things and kept the old stuff.

The black part seems to be in pretty good condition no dents, I can double check though.

Putting in the new aluminum seems kind of a like a PITA though

My dad bought the 502 crate and put it in his truck and I'm not really impressed at all, especially for what he paid

Oh and new change of plans, my ADD is at work

I'm just going to get 049 with stock sized valves, they will have 3 or 5 angle valve job though.

I'm going to get pistons to put the compression at around 10.5:1

And then I'm going to be happy with what power I make, and not let this snowball. :D

And then the extra money goes towards the much needed 5.13 gears. Which should hopefully feel like adding another big block.

which one....there are a couple of 502's

I paid about 4500.00 for my 454HO....
mounted a 6-71 and dual 750's on it...
ran beautiful...more power than I ever needed in a K5

rectangular heads, big valves, forged crank. pistons, rods, 4 bolt mains,
roller cam, 8" ballancer, alum. intake.....what more could you need ?
all new and 24,000 mile warranty...

Ever since GM started it's performance line of engines, I gave up on the rebuild stuff.....
I bet I have installed or helped install 15 crate engines for friends, and they all were very happy with the results...
To me it just makes sense....

to me it is a no brainer...

I'm working on a big block build. I would really like some advice from someone that knows Chevy's. This is my fist build. I have build many toyotas and other vehicles. I have questions about combinations of parts. I know what I want but I'm not sure what combination of parts I should use to get there. I have 049 heads on a 2 bolt main 454. I want to make around 500 ponies and 600 ft lbs of torque on pump gas which I know is very do able. I'm not sure what pistons are in this motor. It runs good or seems to but it has been sitting for a while. I don't know if I should tear into it or what I should do. I was told that the motor was recently rebuilt. I'm not trying to steal this post, just looking for some insight. Where do I start guys?

It's really a matter of 1k vs 5k.

I only have probably 1700 into my truck so far, I couldn't see spending 5k on a truck to beat on.

I should pretty much have all the crate engine lists besides the forged crank and pistons, but you really don't need those. I'll have a roller cam and aluminum intake, roller rockers, and I should still be around 1k.

With the aluminum heads I'll be towards 2k but I should have around 600hp. I may not even end up doing this if I'm happy with the rebuild.

I would say bigger valves in the heads and some bowl clean up and gasket match.

If your pistons have a small dome you should be good to go there, if they are flat you'll be below 9:1 compression.

I wouldn't want to turn it over 5000 rpm though with that bottom end. It seems like once you tear it apart the cost adds up quickly lol.

The 468, 570 hp has works 049 heads and I think an isky 280 cam.

Wow, that sounds nice. I have been told that I shouldn't have issues with my 2 bolt mains as long as I'm not pushing high rpms for long lengths of time but I am still learning when it comes to this chevy stuff.

with your own thread!
you'll get lots of advice to sort through.
SORRY for the Hi-Jack Howdiy

I don't mind hi-jacking in my thead, I actually kind of like it :D I miss the days when I would have 5 pages of nonsense before I got anything done to post :haha:

I'm not really doing anything to important now anyways, just bench racing.

I'm probably just going to re-use my bolts though

I have turned my k30s stock 2 bolt 454 to where the stock tach quits moving (stright down) pretty sure its off but my guess is 6k or so. I have done it so many times I quit worrying about it, still I don't care if it blows up. I wouldn't worry about a bottomend with good bolts in the rods and mains.

Thanks for the help guys. I know I'm looking to get around 9.5 to 1. I don't think it will take to much to make good reliable horse power out of the motor that I have. I'm currious how much work has been done to this engine. It's in the truck now but I'm going to get it fired up, do a compression check etc and see where I'm at. How many psi of compression would I have at 9.5 to 1? I was thinking around 175. Where would that put my cr?

Just got forged .60 over .250 dome, rods with ARP bolts, rings, and bearings for $410. I'm pretty pleased with the price, They are supposed to arrive next Saturday

I started the porting of the heads, nothing major mainly just smooth up in the bowl and gasket matching.

I have a question though, I may have the chance of going one size up in the valve to a 2.19/1.88

Do you think I should do that or stay with the stock valve size?
