NV4500 Swap

What is best way to clean the transmission and tcase? Can I use wire wheel on a drill? Should I paint them? I have heard yes and no on paint (paint holds heat?)
What you are referring to about transmission paint is for autos and even then its voodoo. Doesn't apply to manuals. I painted mine, you should paint yours. Even if you get it dirty constantly at the end of the day it makes for a lot easier clean up.

Which speedometer driver gear would I want? I figure I should get this right while I have everything out. I have 4.10 gears and run 315/75 R16 tires (Goodyear MTR).

It's not leaking terribly at the output or the area would be drenched...but there is just a lip seal inside the output housing. To find the other leak follow the trail of wet and clean aluminum upwards. The fluid will leave a trail downwards from it's source. You might want to dis-assemble and re-seal the whole thing. It's not terribly hard.

I am planning on dis-assembling my np241 tonight to reseal it. Anything I need to be aware of when doing this? Just unbolt it, take the two halves apart, clean, reseal, and re-assemble?

Do I need to remove the slip yoke and speedo housing before separating the 2 halves or can I separate as a whole?

I'd remove them piece by piece, then you can re-seal each one on re-assembly and know it'll be dry. I also can't remember if there is anything that would prevent you from doing it in one shot. We did that SYE article 11 years ago. The irony is I'll have to re-read the article I wrote when I do the SYE on my 241 here soon. :haha:

That is my plan.

Is this a snap ring?

I got it all apart easy enough.

Found some gunk in the small filter and magnet:

The magnet had very few pieces of small metallic bits.

Also, how much slack is allowed on the chain?

I was putting it back together, tightening the bolts up, and I hear/feel them snap. I guess the whole assembly was sitting a bit up? The two halves were just about touching with no bolts. Hopefully this is a part that is available and cheap!

Aww, man! That's a bummer. I will take care to avoid that when I go through this process (hopefully soon, before the weather gets below zero degrees :doah:).

My broken part is the oil pump. It is fairly cheap at $30-50. I will be ordering one tonight along with the speedo driven gear and the NV4500 Shift Top dust boot. FUN!

From where are you getting the shifting boot?

Hopefully from here:

http://www.allstategear.com/NV4500_Shift_Top_Parts.htm

The dust boot I need is the small one right on top of the Shift Top, not the in-cab one. I am going to wait on that one and see where the shifter is compared to the Tcase shifter. I cannot get the shopping cart to work on the website above, so I called them and left a message.

So, I had some issues with getting my tcase back together. I got frustrated with it and took a weekend off. Had some family/social events and one of our many annual camp outs (this one is an awesome abalone/crab coast trip with a big group of friends) that made life busy.

My buddy came over and re-installed some motivation in me last weekend and I made good progress. I fabbed up a valley drain tube and got it installed. I got the bell housing modded to fit over the starter nose cone. Pilot bearing and flywheel installed. Identified the shifter location hole (still have to cut the hole).

My other buddy who was going to help me copy the missing clutch brace got busy with work, so I did not want to bug him for his free time. I ended up finding another complete pedal setup at a truck recycling yard this week (for only $48 - he couldn't sell me just the brace so he gave me 50% off).

Plans for the weekend:

Install clutch and tranny.
Finish up the tcase and get that and rear d-shaft installed.
Finish up pedal install.

Still need to get master cylinder reservoir and in cab shifter boot. I can't seem to find the master reservoir. Can this be purchased new?

I also have a ujoint that is done for on the front d-shaft cv joint. I have heard these are a pain in the rear to change. True?

So getting close!
