OFFICIAL* Dante's Peak Suburban Build *

I never heard what he needed.

Not sure what his requirements for an engine are, and I didn't hear from him today. Except for this film clip, which he posted in response to one of my trip pictures:

And, no, you can't see the pictures, Wade. They're on that other website. You know, the one that isn't CK5...

But I'm sure they'll show up here within the next 12 months or so... :pimp:

But Lawrence's membership is now current, so hopefully we'll be seeing him on here again soon.

there is a local guy to me with new un opened crate 290hp 350 gm engine . hits c-list every few months and is 300-400 off even the free ship price . but if I got it then shipping to him would kill it .

His truck is TBI.

LS swap time!

Maybe we should see if there is any way we can set it up to get it up into Montana? I am only a couple hours from the border every weekend now. My girlfriend and I could probably just make a trip down into Montana to pick it up and I'll bring it home with me to drop in either the L18 I have sitting on the stand or I'll pick up an LQ4 for it. I can drop it off again when I head south for King of the Hammers in February.

Lawrence doesn't want me to donate more time / cash into his truck for him, but he has no say in the matter lol!

:thumb: Russ is my hero! You guys still racing millers old zj?

Russell, your generosity seems boundless

Like you're one to talk Greg :haha: I think you're worse than I am  :waytogo:

You mean the True North Racing ZJ? Yep. It's pretty much repaired. I think the guys just needed to finish re-assembling it with the completed third member and get a new replacement front driveshaft put together. I am no longer financially involved with the rig and I am in the process of putting together my own 4500 class ZJ to race in 2017 or 2018. I will fly the True North Racing flag, but I'll be a separate entity within that crew.

I'll echo the hero comment. The generosity of folks around here is regularly an inspiration for me to be more generous. I'll gladly meet up with any of the CK5 regulars in real life. So far they've all been neat folks. :thumb:

You know him...he really, really wants to feel like he's put something into this build. He never believes me that his time, research skills, and part-sourcing abilities were important to the build. He just feels like the parts donors did all the work. That round of drama last year has soured the whole thing for him. He feels like he has to do it all by himself now. :doah:

He doesn't seem to believe me that the build has brought joy to others, and that it has been a worthwhile endeavor overall.

This is today's news:

No luck getting any one above a order support person at JEGS. Spent most of the day looking for another number or persons name from the company.

I can not ask for any one to do any thing more from ck5 or any place else. I'll just keep trying on my own to save for a year or so to buy a motor. If I would of been beating on it or hitting it hard hammering on rocks or drag racing I could say ok maybe I screwed the dog.

Russell paid good money to buy the motor from Off Road Design and to install it. I feel he got the short end of the deal. To buy another used motor and to pay some one to install it seems like another bad deal. A new crate motor for $1,500 with a 3 year warranty is the safest.

Here's hoping you can talk some sense into him better than I can...

Let me make a few things perfectly clear here,

The engine was purchased from ME, Not ORD.

I Pm'd Lawrence when he bought the burb and offered to sell the engine to him at a what I conceived to be a very fair price for what he was getting. It was well known where the engine came from and what it had been used for. It's life before me is unknown but it came out of my buggy that had been used for several years doing standard buggy stuff and also done 1 KOH and 1 Vegas to Reno. The engine ran when it was taken out for a larger newer engine. It made good oil pressure and had yearly oil changes the entire time I used it recreationally and several oil changes between KOH 09' and V2R09'.I would have installed it into any vehicle I planned to drive and expect it to last for many miles. I obviously don't know what has been done since it left me or how many miles are on it but I assume that it has had regular oil changes and been maintained, Lawrence seems like the guy that would get that sort of routine maintenance done.

When all of this was happening Russell reached out to me and said he was buying the engine and also asked me to install it or see if I could find anyone to install it. I offered up to do it for what I say was a cheap price. I know Russell and wanted to make this right for him and I wanted to treat everyone fairly.

It's been more than 2 years since this was all done. At the time I took the time to go through and make sure that all the fluids were full and serviceable and that the overall vehicle was in decent enough condition for Lawrence. The vehicle was overall in ok shape for it's age and I had no hesitation that everyone (Russell, Lawrence, and Myself) were getting a good deal.

The only thing that ORD had to do with this is to allow me to use their shop tools and some help when I needed more than one set of hands to get this done.

I'm very sorry to say that I'm insulted by this statement, If someone has an issue with me on this they can reach out to me. I'm available by PM here.

$1500 crate engine or free L18 & 4L80e worth $4000? The choice seems clear?

I'm sorry that you feel you have been insulted. It certainly wasn't my intention. I'm trying to relay news back and forth since he hasn't been on the site lately. That is all.

I think he has every right to be insulted by this statement, whoever said it...

I will add that the engine was running well a few weeks ago, aside from smelling rich out the exhaust pipe. I spent a few minutes looking it over (externally), and it did not seem to be an engine in need of maintenance or repair. I would not think that such a clean-looking engine has seen gross neglect recently.

For whatever that's worth. :dunno:

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE DO NOT MAKE HIM FEEL BAD AGAIN ON THIS BUILD .

IT DAM NEAR KILLED HIM THE LAST TIME .

PLAY NICE OR GO SOME OTHER PLACE / THREAD . :deal:

and I read that statement as facts not blame . it is what it is a used engine . you can get 1million miles or 1 mile . . . . you never know .

Someone will most likely get butt hurt over what I have to say but here it goes.

Engines are mechanical things. Mechanical things fail, sometimes for seemingly no rhyme or reason.

A used engine is a USED engine.

Two years can be a LONG time.

This is life.

After thinking about it for 1/2 an hour, this comment is exactly why Lawrence does not want to get parts or help from anyone anymore. Too many strings are attached to this truck already. He wants to get to the point where he can actually own something (outright) without folks constantly criticizing him and making him feel like he owes them for things.

Thus his plans to raffle the truck off so he doesn't have to worry about what people think anymore. It's eating him up. And that's why he's not on CK5 anymore. Ever notice that he disappeared after the drama thread started? Too many folks imparting too much guilt. Things got to be no fun, so the build halted. The exterior is still not quite done, and he wants to redo the interior to make it more authentic. He's even talked of doing an auto swap to get it completely like the movie truck.

But he's done with CK5. This drama has burned him up. He does things now and then, as he has funds. But they don't show up in this thread. You have to know him outside this site to keep current on the progress.

He won't. He'll just continue his policy of silently keeping away from CK5. I was trying to convince him that things had settled down and he could come back from his self-imposed exile. But I no longer see that happening. Maybe it was a waste of effort getting his membership current. :dunno:
