Old Iron 2.0

I believe I overtorqued the shit out of the 3/8" bolts that come with the B52's... I initially torqued them to 65 lbs. then looked it up and from what I read a Grade 8 3/8" course thread bolt has a max torque of 44 lbs.

I backed them off and re-torqued to 40 lbs.

Still don't feel comfortable with it, I feel like they would shear off at any given moment due to being over stressed from the beginning.

Now I do have quite a few 3/8 bolts that I used in place of the rivets on the stock bracketry but if I remember correctly I torqued them to 50 lbs or so when I put them in so I'm probably gonna throw those in the trash.

Another things is the captured nut brackets that come with the B52's and Shackle Flip use pinch-lock style nuts and I'm honestly not a big fan of them.

I think I will hit the fastener store and get Grade 8 7/16 bolts, washers and nyloc nuts tomorrow and drill all the holes in the new bracketry and frame out to 7/16".

Shoulda just went ahead and did it from the beginning... that's what I've done on all of my past trucks.

Pics of all that got done tonight, I got off about 5 hours later than expected and then I had to run to the store to grab red loctite then I ran out of daylight.

Last pic is of how my garage currently sits, I've got way too much stuff in this 1 car garage, good thing is that the tires, both front axles, both core supports and both inner fenderwells won't be taking up valuable room in here for too much longer.

Good Progress.

Is that area you want to explore on base at Carson? Do they let you roam around out there? Seen many a cool area from Driving down I-25 on the east side and even better stuff on the west side from hwy 115. There's a recreation area on the west side off of 115 that looks to be for military only that looked pretty cool I've always wondered about.

Yes, it's on Fort Carson. They have an ATV trail just inside of Gate 20 (the Gate coming from Fountain) and some people take trucks on it, I'm not sure if it's allowed or not.

The area that I took a picture of is right behind where I work but I found out that it's a training area so when I do go up there it'll be on a weekend or around a holiday when I know nobody will be out there doing training.

The back 40 of Fort Carson has a lot to offer, it's been about 4 years since I've been back there so I will have to re-familiarize myself with the area.

The is some stuff on the other side of the fence off of 115 coming from the south but again it's been awhile since I've been over there.

I'll post pics of the honey holes when I can.

Depending on where you go I bet the wheeling gets interesting if they are doing live fire exercises. Not that they would let you go downrange at that time!

You got two of the nastiest rock crawling trails just down the road in Penrose right off of 115 from the base. Independence and Patriot are two beasts that are pretty tough to run. They are narrow and tight so either isn't very nice to full size sheet metal though.

No way in hell I would be anywhere near a livefire lol. You wouldn't see any more posts from me on here.

And thanks, I didn't know they had anything close here. I go up Old Stage Road and Gold Camp Road but there not much up there but the trail.

Well I didn't get my nyloc nuts but I got all of the hardware for free so I'm not complaining.

Bolts are 1.5" long, a little on the long side but that shouldn't be an issue.

Ok, got the B52's and shackle hangers opened up to 7/16" as well as the corresponding holes in the frame.

Ended up using the 1.5" bolts. Red loctite and 65 lbs. of torque.

I'll be opening up the holes on the shackle flip to 7/16" early in the morning and hopefully my bushings get here at a decent time so I can wrap this thing up tomorrow.

I've been taking my time with everything, cleaned up all of the bolt holes in the frame with a carbide bit in my dremel then a small sanding wheel in the dremel.

Had to remove a little bit of material from the DIY4X shackle hangers on the top most corner, that portion was hitting the top flange of the frame rail on both sides, was roughly 1/8" that was removed and cleaned up with a flapper wheel.

Everything went smooth, I just took my sweet ass time and made sure everything was done as best as possible.

Forgot to mention that I sheared off the two front body mount bolts in the cab too... really pissed about that one.

I have to figure out how to replace the captured nut that is in the channel on both sides where they rest. Super shitty.

You got a lot of places within an hour or two from where you are. Indy/Patriot are pure rock crawling trails no more than a mile long each but can take all day. There are trails around Buena Vista as @bent72 said which is off of hwy 24. More trails are to the south of Buena Vista between there and Salida. Those lead over to the Gunnison/Taylor park area where there are more to explore. Go north from Buena Vista and you'll hit Leadville with stuff to do around there too.

All three areas are good to hit. Some are just steep shelf climbs, others have some rocks, others have both. Some go from point a to b, some go up to the top of a peak and you return the way you came. So depending on what trail you hit you can link up a couple in a day. Plus there are quite a few high mountain lakes that have some good fishing in them too.

Are you talking about the front cab mounts?
