Old Iron Build ('79 K5 Cheyenne)

Well fellas, I guess I'll be doing 52" springs up front and 56" in the rear. I got under the truck and looked at the forward spring hangers on the rear springs and moving them forward wont be an option until I can separate the body from the frame (which I don't plan on doing), I dont have the stuff to do all of that. So I'll hold onto the 64's for a later date maybe or put them on my pickup.

I may only be running 35's instead of 37's or 39.5's. I've got plenty of time to decide on that though.

I need to place an order with DIY4X and order some templates for the shackle hangers so I don't end up with some boogered up egg shaped holes.

Being flexible in a build is good. It gets you out on the trail sooner.

52's flex great. 56s will work good in the rear.

I say congrats on getting closer to being on the trail!!!

I would like to have everything ready by this summer to take the family out for camping and some trails. It all depends on time and money.

I'm just going to go with the 52/56 swap for now and I think I'll be happy with it for awhile. Maybe later on I'll be able to do the 56/64 swap.

A little more info that I pulled up on the 52" spring swap.

52" springs with the B52 brackets should be just fine without moving the shackle hanger forward. I will try to refrain from drilling extra holes in the frame unles need be, especially a 2 1/8" large hole.

Photos courtesy of DIY4X photobucket.

52" springs, B52 brackets, DIY4X shackle hanger and 6" shackles.

Shackle angle is exactly what I'm looking for.

I still think some sort of bracing to tie in the top and bottom legs could be advantageous. Even just a simple strap between the top and bottom legs of the frame

I'll try and figure something out in that area. I remember you mentioning that there's a lot of flex in that area, definitely dont want cracks or to tear the frame apart there.

You'll be fine, dozens of rigs on here run that same setup including myself.

I've just been trying to figure out why the hell people keep moving the shackle hanger hole forward. Is it just the guys with big tires doing this for more firewall clearance?

I'll probably run 35's and dont think the tire will hit the firewall with the axle in the factory position.

How much further forward has your axle moved with the 52 swap?

I'm 2"+ forward, not sure exactly to be honest since I run 52's with an offset pin plus I'm all the way forward in the B52 (now A-bomb).

Is that 2nd picture of the passenger tire fully stuffed? Do you know what the offset Of the center pin is?

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know if you have ever seen my build thread for my 1990 Blazer, but I just moved it out of curiosity.

pretty well stuffed and 1.75" IIRC, the springs are closer to 53" when flat.

So the center pin is moved 1.75" towards the front of the spring, correct?

How much space would you say you have between the tire and the firewall stuffed like that?

Just trying to figure out what my tire to firewall cleanace might be like based on yours taking into account that your axle will be 1.75" more forward than mine.

yes the axle is forward on the spring and I'm all the way forward in the A-Bomb.

Not sure on the firewall since I have inner fenders still but I'd say I'm a finger or two off that. I just rub the outer fender a bit, as you can see in that pic. I should also mention those BFG 35's are really measuring out to 33.5"
