One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

This is a darned handy piece of gear I was only too excited to try out over my lunch hour. No more risk of warping flanges, and I can lay down a pretty fat cover almost immediately after a fusion pass like this one.

Tank rental is worth it for a protion of a project like this.
I may just do that, especially when I pivot to the car.
@AgDieseler, Wifey is wondering how heavy the truck is now that you've added 27 metric tons of welding rod and heavy-duty modifications.

Have you scaled it recently?
Well, it hasn’t moved since June 25, so let me get back to you on that one.

Is that like Snuffleupagus?
It’s like he made a baby with the tin man.

This is a far as I got...

You are speaking my language David. I'm about 30 minutes behind you down here in Austin..... closing out a few emails and I'll be pouring a cold one here as well.

We stumbled into that as a weekly tradition. I’m confident y’all have been an influence.
Is that your muffler?
Yessir. Vibrant perforated resonator. It’s similar to my last one from MBRP, but 304 stainless, packing and all. There’s enough room to add a chambered muffler downstream if I want one.

Don't know if I've ever heard a diesel with a chambered muffler.
With a resonator, it would quiet down pretty much like a gasser. I’m going to try the resonator only, first, because I still feel like a kid.

That section is also done, and I got a jump on the mid-pipe.

I’m hitting it early tomorrow. The ORD brake lines showed up, and there’s a lot of assembly work ahead for this Return to Flight program.

Hard for me to believe that. None of mine have been even remotely quiet by modern standards. Always a ping and a crackle, even with chambered mufflers. Curious how yours turns out.

Hahaha! :rotfl:

Shame... nothing left to do snd the weekend is only half over.
...and with some luck, I might even get a chance to hear it before tomorrow is done.
That is by far the most complicated looking single tube exhaust I’ve ever seen. And it is by far the prettiest piece of exhaust fab I’ve seen. Looks great.
Thanks dude. It’s a skinny path to get around the coilover, leave room for the driveshaft without cooking the trans lines, snake past the 205, route through the swaybar and shock brace, sneak past the axle at full bump, and find an exit path that leaves an air gap to the rear brake line, and at some point build a tail pipe and turn down that still has an air gap with the fuel tank.

That’s a lot to ask from a single piece, and I can tell you it’ll not doable without a fair bit of oval and some tight radius stuff.
