One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

*Cough* JANA76 *cough*

Sorry I had to clear my throat from all of my crunched gear teeth
I was just reading up on JANA76 stuff again the other day, it's a decent option for low pinion applications that show problems with ring gear teeth. However it's important to note the pinion is the same size so that remains a possible weak link.

I would look at Cryo treating the 60 gears myself. That is what we ended up doing in the race car to get more than 1 KOH race out of a HP60 gear set.

Honestly I could have probably got a long time out of some race gears like Ryan did but I told myself after my second set of gears it was time. It’s ring teeth both times so it solved my problem.
Next is the pinion shaft breaking.

Details on 60 days of adventure?
60 days of adventure prep. We’re doing the NV BDR for the Powerstop Trail this year, and it’s 1000 miles of mostly two track trails plus whatever we have to do on the highway to/from the trailhead. We might detour for some actual rocks, but in general, it’s 10 days of living out of the truck as we cross the state.

I’ve paused the Charger to focus on the truck, make upgrades, fix problems, and generally just get it ready for a long trip.

I do have a HP60 though.
If I have to build a front axle again for the truck, I’ll start with something like this; probably a super 60.

Someone got their math wrong.
I would love to have 60 days off work and go travel.
But that's 2 months, where did the 3rd month come from

Won't need your chainsaw for this one. I don't think they have trees in Nevada.

Quick question. Since you have had great success with your Smurf blue thread sealer mixture, I was wondering how long did the motor sit after applying the Smurf Blue before you first fired it up? I am trying to figure out cure time.

When I put the 5.13 gears in my axles 15 years ago, Stephen had talked me out of the 5.38 gears. Obviously the 5.13 gears have been fine.

Speaking of dreams, mine is to build a 14 bolt front axle. Then since I'll know the ins and outs of a steering 14 bolt, I can put in rear steer.

Since I have to go 5.13 soon myself, I wish I had a 14b front too. Doing gears in the 60 SUCKS lol
Glad I kept my setup bearings.

That 1000 mile trip sounds awesome.

Sounds like another epic trip! Super jealous, once my c10 is done the 82 is getting the overland treatment.

Funny enough, it’s your truck I referenced as a go-by for 5.13s on a heavy and similarly sized rig. If Scott doesn’t kill them, I might not either.

About a week. Not more than two.

That 1000 mile trip sounds awesome.
It’s going to be a good one, even if I ground camp. 10 days in the desert is a fine prescription.

the 82 is getting the overland treatment.
Taking good care of dad’s truck.

The older I get the more overlanding appeals to me more than destroying the trucks I worked so hard to build
Absolutely the same thinking as mine. Build it, wheel it within some reasonable boundaries that it won’t be chewed up, camp, go far, see things, drive home.

Also, it’s a fine way to reason our way to building dedicated trail rigs.
