One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Seems like my high idle solenoid is dead. I've verified 12V to the coil, jumpered both power and ground just in case, the temp switch is closed, and I got nothing. I have another in stock that works just fine, but it's just a factory civvy piece rather than the compact M998 takeoff with the offset spade that I'm using now to clear the dual thermostat output.

These compact ones seem impossible to find, but I'll put it out here - anybody have one? I'm a buyer.

New glow plug controller arrives today, because my current one sounds like it's about to explode.

From lemons, comes lemonade.

Broken coil wire and no conductivity from the lead wire to ground, so no point in trying to resolder. I started to adapting (what I think) is the original 1985 solenoid.

Profile difference is minor, but the adjustment screw would touch the thermostat outlet without some modification.

Passed function check; final install tomorrow:

I'll just keep posting my little boring maintenance items like it's a 4 link build. I have a new glow controller ready to go.

I see at least 4 links in those pictures. So I think it counts. :deal:

Interesting. Wish I had put something like this in the cooling circuit a long time ago.

What is the filter setup you're using. Found a Wix setup on Summit but it seems to have mixed reviews. Just thinking that if I'm doing a new radiator in the crew cab maybe I'd add a filter setup myself.

Base: Baldwin CFB5000
Filter: Baldwin B5134 (no chemicals)

I feel a lot better using a filter with my new radiator, but I also did a thorough flush of the block prior to putting everything in service. That released a surprising amount of crud, and the first filter seemed to get the rest. I'll check again in two oil changes (post Moab) and see if there's anything new.

Thanks for the info!

I wish I would have thought to try and flush the block out while it was on the stand.

I fly a lot.

It takes me away from home and family, and this is the first familiar thing I see after landing. There's no better way to get my mind and body back in it's right place after time away.

Last work trip until August. The mountains are calling.

Fancy airport parking. When I leave a car at the airport it looks like it's been through a sandstorm while I was away.
