One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

If you are heading into the mountains on highway 50 be sure to wave as you pass the Chevy dealer in Canon City. That's where I'm embedded at daily with the foothills teasing me with the view.

The road trip officially started at 0400, and we burned off the first 600 miles, so tomorrow should be a relaxing cruise into Colorado Springs.

Truck ran well, though I'm not a fan of the new Chevron Delo 15w-40 formula since it doesn't maintain the same hot pressure as Rotella's T4 decomposed dinosaur juice. Normal is 40, and the Delo ran 35 except for immediately after we idled at a rest stop or things were cooled by a thunderstorm. We've been extremely pleased with the Vintage Air AC - steady 46-50 the whole way.

And now, your moment of zen:

After a little over 1800 miles of highways, byways, trails, and one mountain pass, we're back home.

The truck ran very well, and I'm convinced the intercooler is the reason - never saw EGTs over 900, water never passed 205 before the fan clutch roared, plenty of power in the passes to maintain 65 and 70 with the AC, and an average of 15 mpg. I had a slight window tint applied (ceramic 80) that really helped keep the truck cool between Dallas and Amarillo. A few photos:

Nice pictures. I love running the trail on the backside of the Sand Dunes. I remember one time we probably spend an hour in one section helping people with airing down. They kept coming by and getting stuck because they didn't air down. At some point a park ranger showed up and thanked us for helping.

Super nice pics!
Thank you. We take a bunch and sort/delete to find the ones we like.

That was a really neat trail. The Subarus we're doing better in the sand than the Brahs and their JKs.
Very cool stuff.
Thanks!
that dog sure did stumble upon the right home.
I did just realize half of our photos have Harriet in them.

Work is nuts, but I've been out in the shop as much as I can. I have my list for BB17, and at the top of it was getting the CK-4 Delo out of my engine. The earth now spins in the correct direction. Thank you, Rotella.

Great Pics! Nice choice on taking the back way into the dunes. Medano pass is a fun little trail. Pretty amazing view looking back on the dunes from a distance. Love that area.

Looks like you all had fun and the truck working as well as it did is icing on the cake.
