One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

The truck has a vibration above 65 that only gets worse as you go past 70. CV shaft is at 15* slope and the yoke is right on the border between 13* and 14*, so I don't think it's an angle problem. But at 5' long, this 4" .120 wall driveshaft makes its problems known.

I packed it up, scheduled a pickup, and off it went to Tom Woods for eval and repair.

We have a few trips coming up this fall, and I'd like to be able to drive the speed limit.

Hope that fixes it for you! I hate vibrations!

Me too, right along with rattles and squeaks; distractions from the music of the engine, exhaust, tire hum, and turbo spool.

The TW crew was not complimentary of the work I had done by a local driveshaft shop to convert it from slip-yoke to fixed yoke. Lesson learned there. They're rebuilding the slip, and I went ahead and asked them to install new joints as PM. Should have it back this time next week, and will report results.

We're hitting the road to Destin, FL by way of NOLA and Mobile. I might make a side trip to northern AL to visit the worlds largest Mopar salvage yard. Need a few panels for another project.

It doesn't sound like your angles are to blame.

were you in uptown last week?
Tuesday, I think.

It doesn't sound like your angles are to blame.
Definitely not. Speeding to finish the magnum-205 in time for a trip is to blame. Couldn't send it to Tom Woods in time to be up and running, so I used Driveshaft King in Dallas, which as it turns out is more of the court jester of driveshafts.

Tom Woods sends his work wrapped up like a Dexter victim.

All installed and operating smoothly. 70 is as comfortable as 65, if a little loud. I should have had TW do it from the start.

Probably time to finish the exhaust out to the rear of the truck, and add a bit more sound insulation.

Also managed to rewire the trailer harness, and tomorrow I'll load up the car hauler and head to the media blaster.

David

Nice! I would definitely advise getting the exhaust out the back at least! Sound proofing would be a good idea also obviously.

You're right. The wife can't stand long drives in the truck, and I can't blame her. It's pretty darned loud.

Meanwhile, it's not often you get to have all your project vehicles in one photo. I took the Mopar for blast and prime last week, and should get it back tomorrow:

That is a whole lot of coolness going on in that pic!! Awesome
what he said ^^^^
Thanks! Picked it up two years ago, and made a deal with myself that the Suburban would come first - final transmission and transfer case upgrade - before a penny was spent on the Charger. With lots of miles on that combination, I'm now up to my prostate in Mopar unibody.

That's a hell of a drop hitch.

Martin
That would be a foot-and-a-half. The ORD bumper places the receiver tube up high, and to get the "normal" hitch height of 20" - 24" with my springs, I picked up an 18" drop hitch at 4WP. It turned out fairly level, but I'm not planning any 10K lbs loads.

Meanwhile, while the car was out I cleaned the shop. It validated the goodness of using casters wherever possible. Air compressor and main storage shelf are the only exceptions, and I have plans for the latter.

Had a bundle of 4" tubing show up at the house; should be enough to finish the exhaust out to the back. Serenity now.
