One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

shit man... i need to step up my plumbing, you're kicking ass over there!
Thanks man. I figured it's a skill I've got to develop. That other car I'm building doesn't have one lick of tubing: brakes, fuel, and all the other dino-juices.

Adjusted the bulkhead connector mounting locations. Actually did it twice. Didn't like the first version - a simple hammer and dolly relief for the lower fitting - so I undid that, and built this.

Still need to blend the lines with the DA. It's a lot of work for just another 1/8" of clearance, but I enjoy the details.

I love it when some thing doesn't look modified cause it was done so well.
That's been my aspiration for projects in general these last few years: built a garage, building a car, tinkering on the suburban, etc. Just want to make the very best product I can.

The biggest enabler for me was when my work situation changed such that the truck was allowed to be down for weeks/months. That let me ditch ideas that weren't working as I'd originally thought they would.

No way a project like this gets done by a hobbyist without plenty of time taken.

I'm delayed at the airport, which is majorly interfering with my plans to bend 1/2" tubing tonight. So, all I can do is share a photo or two of what my brother in law has been working on with the intercooler.

I understand that. It's just that I've seen too much inferior level work in my career. I have seen a q.a. man revoke an artisans certification stamp for chitty work one afternoon and that same q.a. man certify the same artisan as ready to travel on a field repair team an hour later.
(Artisan is their fancy name for a mechanic. Some should be called butchers..)

Now, wondering for myself, I figure we're a non-profit gub'mint facility...what corners are the airlines cutting keep their shareholders happy? I know a couple of guys who work at a 3rd party repair facility from years back. He said basically he supervises a bunch of Mexicans (his words) and signs off their work.

If I had it all to do over again, I'd have been a diesel mech.

Here's a pile of engine oil cooler lines that didn't quite work out.

This side uses the larger 1/2" tube and has the tightest clearances around the AC condenser and torque box. I'm trying one more configuration before I do something different.

This is actually a lot of fun. I have zero remorse about ditching earlier designs.

One of the habits many successful writers develop is working early in the day. Just after waking, our brains are at their peak for plasticity and ease of thought. Also, I've found that early hours are my most productive.

Here's what a full night's sleep and early start netted:

It could also be that the 5th time is the charm when bending a line.

Looks like the tube is on one side of the one hold down bracket, and the other side of the other bracket. Is that bracket movable?

Oh yes. They're not even screwed down, yet. I've just used them as spacers during the mockup to make sure the tubing had a consistent gap from the torque box.

Looks very professional, if not better.
Thank you! One more to go.
