One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Thanks. I swore I had one. Searched through my inventory, and couldn't seem to find it. Glad new GM castings were not terribly expensive.

Yes, you definitely had one. It was sitting on the workbench and even wound up in my hand at one point. Was it just the bolt hole that cracked? Might have been easier to weld it up if it wasn't leaking. :dunno:

What he (y5mgisi) said. You're working at a serious custom/artist level. I don't have that kind of patience, not to mention the skill set involved.

Just a few steps closer to returning to flight.

I spent much of the weekend painting and prepping the core and valence. Painting when it's humid is especially difficult. Last coat coming:

Power steering lines. Last aluminum tube I have to mess with until the AC.

I templated the oil line reinforcements with my plastic clamps while waiting for these Billet Specialties aluminum pieces to arrive. Installed, and ready to hookup.

And the payoff - started modifying the Peninsular marine intake and a tight radius elbow from Vibrant to make a new upper plenum.

Couldn't resist setting up a first draft of the routing.

The momentum toward First Fire is building.

Looking awesome :waytogo:.

With the intercooler piping you might need to put a support bracket under where it turns past the alternator. I had to do that on mine since the one pipe is U shaped. It'll just flop around otherwise.

Don't remember how much boost you said you're running but putting a lip of some kind on the end of the pipes helps a ton with keeping the together. Hairspray working really good to seal it too.

...you might need to put a support bracket under where it turns past the alternator...
There's a threaded boss on the back of the secondary alternator that just might come in handy. That's where the old upper radiator return was supported.

I'm a poor estimator of time required to finish.

I know how you feel. I had a short lived thought that my rig would be on the road in time for snow duty last winter. Then priorities changed and now I'm wondering if it will even be functional in time for this winter.

Billy Maddison reference?
Indeed. Dumb movie from my impressionable years.

For the record, while building in the shop, I listen (almost exclusively) to jazz from the 20s to the early 70s. It's a finely tuned Pandora station. Miles Davis' Kind of Blue started it for me.
