One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

I've learned a ton.

Last top coat is on, and I'll wet sand and finish it up tomorrow. The filler profile came out very well. The finish isn't perfect, and I've accepted the handful of hickeys that only those that look closely will notice.

Style wise, it's what I wanted - strategic color contrast and maintaining the patina (and hail dents) on the surrounding surface.

I'm relatively pleased with the results given my lack of experience. I'll flip it over to finish the dynamat and hoodliner before reinstall.

Glad you said you wanted to keep the dents, I almost said something.. looks great though! I think you nailed it!

Whew, makes me tired just reading about all the work.
Yeah. I'm about 75 hours in. Think of it like this - after all this work, it still just covers the engine.

Thanks! I'm eager to judge the results in the sun...installed.

I get tired of banging on the hood to get it to open. Also had a few broken latches and that really sucks.

You know the latch mechanism is adjustable right? It's not really hard or time consuming to adjust and lube the mechanism to where the hood opens the way it should and closes easily.

I'm not talking about on level ground. It's on the trail when you need to pop the hood and inevitably the truck is a little twisted up. Good luck getting the hood open.

I'm actually a bit lubicrant OCD. Spray hinges and latches regularly. Learned it from my dad; if he came to visit he would eventually go around the house and lube all the door hinges, cupboard hinges and latches, basically anything that moved. So I started trying to beat him to it.:rotfl:

Of all the things my POS has done, the hood sticking has never been one of them. Even on the trail, twisted up. And believe me, I've had the hood up a lot on this stupid thing. I'm another vote for properly lubricated and adjusted hood latches are nice to have.

Same here. My hood latch has been temperamental on occasion, but a deep clean and white lithium grease was always a long lasting cure.

NAPA has the parts and they'll go in tonight - this part of the project can be kept simple. Hood pins are of interest, but quite frankly, I just want to drive the truck again, and am a little worn out on working on the hood.

I just need some seat time.
