One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

My crossover runs across the front and under the balancer, and I don't see how you get this done with regular 6.5 manifolds without major use of oval pipe. The Banks stuff fits really well.

If I'm building oval, the downpipe can easily maintain a 3.5" cross section area, and I'll just have to do a bit of widening for 4".

David

Hmm...I'm gonna hafta remeasure mine. I wouldn't have thought that a 3.5" width would have fit in there.

The 6.5 square bodies that I have seen ran the crossover pipe higher than the stock exhaust, bending around the starter. Didn't look like much fun, but it has been done.

3.5" oval. It's like two 2.5" pipes put together, making an oval. The flow/cross-section is the same as a 3.5" round, but just a different shape. It's how you squeeze a big pipe under a chassis that's low to the ground.

David

I'll have a definitive answer for you in a bit, as I'm planning on using an ATS kit like this:

It's a funky manifold, and the cross-over pipe comes out on top like I described earlier.

Sounds like I'll hafta wait before I can see what your custom manifold looks like? This one is more clumsy and less balanced than the 6.5 or the Banks manifold. The banks kit is well laid out, IMO.

Oops, I read that wrong.

I was just gonna stick with 3" exhaust, is there a large gain in going larger? 3" is already a slightly larger cross section than my dual 2" exhaust.

For the fuel you're running, 3" is fine. Past 65 cu mm, 3.5" or 4" helps keep EGTs down.

David

All this talk about squeezing pipe, and I'm just over here with my 3.5 down pipe and 4" exhaust....

My crossover though, is another story. It needs switched. But with the introduction of a front driveshaft and low lift, I will have to get creative with the crossover pipe section.

If you want I can have lasernut cut you a flange on my next order, I have the DXF already..
You have the DXF for a 6.2/6.5 exhaust flange? If so, I'm in. Not in a hurry, so PM me the price for a pair.

David

I would stick with the banks manifold as it fits and works very well. They do make adapter turbo flanges. I bought one to mount my hx-40 onto the stock 6.5 manifold, was like 60 bucks I think.

You can get header flanges for the 6.x engines if you wanted to make your own manifold from scratch but for what you're wanting I'd stick with the banks one.

David, I just looked through 53 pages of your build. I will admit I didn't read everything but it took me two hours. I wish I would have paid more attention to this thread and had the opportunity at Blazer Bash to check it out.Was great to meet you, hanks for the beers Saturday night, I'll be sure to share next year.

Really good BSing with you around the 'campfire'. 4% beer kept us all pretty level-headed, but we'll bring some shiner next time and we can trade.

David
I'm a fan of cheap beer but really liked what you had, just wish I could remember what it was.

I felt bad being in the next cabin over and not getting to spend enough time looking at the Burb. This year kinda went by in a blur

I've been to one Blazer Bash a long time ago. The first thing I swore when we got back was I would take a full two weeks off next time. So many trucks and people and trails in such a short time. It seemed shameful to miss meeting so many friends...

Bass Ale, someone's Oktoberfest, a random Utah pilsner, and Pacifico. Pretty sure you had the Bass.

It was a fast weekend, and I'm glad we got to meet and chat a good bit. Next year, neighbor.

This. I did conference calls to/from the highway, and should have just turned that off and more fully enjoyed the trip. See you there next year?
Yeah Utah likes low octane everything, even the gas is weak compared to other places.
At least their #2 diesel was pure squeezed dinosaur juice. There's a bunch of B5-B20 biodiesel in Texas, and I'm not a huge fan.

Blazer Bash looks more likely than Drag Week for 2018...my biggest hurdle is passport related. I seem to have lost most of my papers when we moved here. The longest lead time is new citizenship papers. I have a photocopy of my birth certificate. I dunno, I can probably get it all sorted in about 6 months. The Blazer is hours away from road and trail worthy.

Closer today than yesterday
