One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

...I can probably get it all sorted in about 6 months...
I hope you do. I've appreciated your contributions in this and other threads, and it would be great to meet and wheel in person. Border control coming from Canada can't be as bad as reenteringTexas.

David

I appreciate the kind words David. The feeling is mutual! I may not run a 6.2 anymore, but that doesn't diminish my interest in them, and the cool work you've done to yours!

Crossing into the US isn't bad, but a passport is required. I'm an immigrant which complicates things a little is all, and only from the standpoint of getting new copies of stuff. A new birth certificate has to come from Holland, then new Canadian citizenship papers from here, then finally the passport. All i have is a photocopy of my birth cert...

I have had a passport before which will help. Mostly this is just an exercise in red tape, but it's something I need to do anyways.

I don't buy many folks beer as I don't drink, but I'd bring some beer for you my friend if I know you're coming, and I hope you do

Not strictly a truck update, but it was present during the making of these photos. Three days in the field yielded two deer.

Sunrise with the moon.

My rig - Kifaru ZXR and Nomad. Weatherby 30-06 for long range interdiction, Armalite AR-10 for a target rich swine environment, and my spotting bipod. It’s way too much gear for the 10 mile loop we hunted.

Deer-thirty.

Shoulder and hams and flanks, 77ish lbs bone-in. Decent sized animals.447EAE0E-5EA5-4B42-84ED-D0B739A4B918.jpeg

Along with the tongues, this will go in some tacos later this week.

I take home the loins. Dry aging for 24 hours, then into the freezer.

Neck roasts, bone in. I’ll probably put one of these in the slow cooker next week.

Back to work. Back to the shop. Back to projects.

I have a bunch of these same gray tubs. LOL The power company here uses them for parts. They will hold more weight than you can pick up and then some. Congrats on the deer!

Pretty stoked about these flanges @sreidmx cooked up for me. New turbo, new headers.

Nothing exotic. Just 3/8 mild steel - easily weldable.

GM really nailed it with their as-cast finish. No need to port. Not. One. Bit.

And this is why new TTY bolts (or ARP studs) torqued in sequence is such a critical part of any rebuild. The deck height on 6.2/6.5 heads made in the 20th century isn’t awesome. There’s internal ribbing, but it’s another one of the big improvements made in the P400 design - thicker deck and induction hardening.

These flanges will have to go on the shelf for a bit. Once I stab the LQ4 in the Charger, the engine stand will be freed up to hold my original 6.2 and start the header mock up.

Happy New Years, y’all.

It's time to make a list for Blazer Bash, and attempt to hold myself accountable.

In some sort of order:
  1. Check every center pin and replace as necessary
  2. New front rotors and EBC yellow stuff pads
  3. New rear shoes - I'm not going to discs on this axle
  4. Replace driver window motor
  5. Clean contacts on each door lock mechanism, or replace
  6. Probably new batteries - my 34/PC1500 Odysseys are 5 years old, and dipping just under 10V when cranking at temps below 50F. They're not long for this world, even hooked up to a battery tender.
  7. Warranty out one more MTR, so I'm running on (2) new tires and (2) from 2014 with (2) from 2013 as spares
  8. Find a trailer to tow Greg's bronco
  9. Bump stops - nothing fancy, just poly over the u-bolt plates
  10. Sway bar - I'll start with one for the rear axle, because that's simple
  11. Rocker protection- I've written this down like 4 times in the last few years and still haven't got around to it
  12. Figure out why exhaust reverses into the cab during compression braking, but not under load, and only with the windows down.
  13. Dynamat the cabin rear of the middle seats. Other than the headliner and in the doors, it's the last uninsulated area in the cab.
  14. Develop gear tie down setup - my tire and cooler and gear footlocker skidded forward on waterfall and most every fin. I'd like things to stay put this time.
What am I missing, @Spork929? With that, I've got to get back out in the shop and finish a guy's bumper.

Winning with number 8.
I'll keep encouraging #baremetalblazerbash2018 up until 9/6/18.
David I’m glad you didn’t discuss building an engine...
Me too. But, I reserve the right to get a wild hair and start in on a set of headers and a new turbo.

It’s been a while since I’ve updated, and the suburban is basically acting as my shop truck. It hauls materials and projects, it crawls in parades, and my bender mounts to it.

Churching up for the local Mardi Gras parade - not everyone appreciates trail rash like we do. Want to know how I got these scars?

That’s the 63 with the LQ9/4L80E and a factory 6 lug 60 rear.

Looking forward to our regular spring wheeling trip, and enjoying the Texas granite.
