One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

This truck needs a sweet vinyl wrap. Like a big rolling billboard for your business. Plus it would cover up all the scratches in the paint.
That’s been suggested and I would just have to get over my love for it as-is. It’s always been blue, and I have a hard time...wrapping...my mind around something different.

Right now, I’m just about fully subscribed for 2019, and am turning away the stuff that doesn’t interest me, build a partnership, expand my capabilities, or pay extremely well. It’s still very much a side gig, and the day job takes every bit of its unfair share.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the crew this year was full of people with a can-do attitude. Pretty good dynamic among a bunch of people who hadn't ever wheeled together, and had a very broad range of experience.

Maintaining the non-linear trail report, here’s what one of the folks captured at the end of Pritchett.

Dangit Dave these videos are making me start to like Jeep guys. Well, at least these guys. Looks like a fun group to be wheeling with. That last section climbing out in the dark with the Burb getting after it was cool.

It’s a testament to how the group was assembled. Kris at Powerstop is friends with us all, and he sets a tone of collaboration and cooperation. We all also naturally fall into that way of being, so right away there was a good amount of unit cohesion. Good folks. It also helps that this isn’t a jeep only event like EJS or one corner of the Dallas cars and coffee.

Yellow hill was fun. The truck hung on the bumper and had to drag the rear to meet the rock face so we could climb, and with the ground out my rear view, we weren’t backing down. We just had to keep working it to find the place where the truck wanted to go.

That's why I have a design in mind that will gain more clearance front and back.
I don't want to lose any of the space the suburban offers but I don't want to hang on the tail either

I only hang up on the really steep inclines. Axle hill didn't grab, and neither did chewy. A different line on yellow hill would have grabbed less. Nothing from Rim, and only the gnarliest stuff at Sand Hollow. It’s a mixed bag.

Just use that fancy pants TE06H turbo to woopow up everything.

I think I am saving it for the perkins.
Just finished buttoning up the 6.2 engine with the old turbo and dropped it in the suburban and put the hood on in time for the rain.
The turbo now spins freely, I guess the pb blaster cleaned up the soot and the bearings are tight and smooth.
 
Busted Knuckle dropped his footage from the first day of Sand Hollow. Lots of jeeps, since this was the day I killed the rear 1350 and it happened fairly early. You can hear it protest, and I eventually winch.

Just got to see the bedslide in action up close. A guy just came to pick up a piece of furniture from us with his work truck, pickup with a camper shell, pretty impressive piece of equipment.

Nice films, David. Looks like you had a heap of fun.
Those guys captured some good moments, and it's fun to relive it.
And 15,000 people now think you have the biggest jeep ever.
I'm pleased to confuse.
