One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

If it an auto to be, start with a 400 or a 4L80e
Oh, Romeo.

4L80e fits perfect in a square body.
It’ll fit, especially if you hate the vehicle you put it in
Certainly, a little tin work doesn’t bother me, and it’s likely just to a bunch of plated in tube work, anyway.

We might push the LS and seating position pretty far back compared to stock. I’m a six footer, and I hate the way most of these trucks feel with fixed columns and benches.

Also, we can now have robust discussion on non-suburban offroadery, here:

Calling a Wagoneer less of everything is a true statement coming from a guy driving a burb like yours. But for 98.57% rest of the public a Wagoneer is still a huge by wide beast to shove down normal jeep trails. Though I approve the delusion, not that you need that either. Full speed ahead!

From what I’ve seen it’s not like you are tearing up a minty woody Grand Wagoneer anyway. Though the FSJ Jeep guys may shed a tear over the beating it may get.
A wagoneer is same length as a k5 but about 4" narrower and comes stock with 110" wheelbase and of course 4 doors.
It is also lighter mostly from thinner frame and sheet metal.

It is a family heirloom, and I need to be a good steward of it. That means making some adult decisions.

I’m really glad you figured this out before it was too late. You made it so capable, and most just push things to destruction at that point. Good work being an adult on this one.

Super excited to see what becomes of it , and to watch the next project go a bit more extreme!

Keep up the good work.

The next BDR trip is penciled.

I’ve got some prep and design to do, and @Greg72, I’m finally going to pull the bumpers for fresh powder.

But first, we need some mounting dimensions for this guy. I’m borrowing from a friend before finalizing the lighting plan and getting this and a few other bits from BD.

After that: grease bearings, chromoly front shafts, steering ram relo’, new switch pros, roof rack, more lights, better internal gear organization, and some miscellaneous cooling upgrades.
