One Piece at a Time: My 1985 Diesel Suburban

Don’t stress. The suburban won’t be at BB, but it would still be great to hang with you. It’ll just barely make it to SEMA, and then trails after that.

I’m bringing the ORD loaner to Moab.

I hope we can run a trail with you and your dad, I’ll make sure I give him a radio.

I knew that was just being a smart azz. I got drag racing and overland at the same time, what a interesting combo to have going on.

thats interesting having the rear quarter roll so far under, I would think it would collect mud or is it closed off in front?

Are you guys giving the frame and suspension components a refesh on paint?
I'll touch up everything underneath with cans of MRO in satin black and ORD FDE.

I need to spend time aligning the lines on mine, not looking foward to that.
It's a process. Take your time. We adjusted two body mounts to get the crisp line correct. The doors were pretty close to being gapped after that.

It’s closed out, otherwise you’re right - muck collector. Only the filler gap is left. That’ll be a removable piece I fab from aluminum.

Is that a recessed area in the floor for a tool box?
The driver side is the old spare tire well, and it’s chopped and now holds the batteries.

Meanwhile, the ORD bumper is getting a profile change. The winch is getting lower by up to 2”, so out of the airflow and out of the way of the bow tie.

I like the idea. Are you going to notch the front also to lower the fairlead?

I'm curious, what size wire did you run from the batteries up to the front? How long have you had the batteries relocated?

Pigeonrat has it's battery relocated under the rear seats, so not quite as long of a run, but I think I'm running 2ga wire. I've been having issues with it starting when the starter gets hot (I assume). I'm running headers, but I have a heat shield on the starter. The thing is, a jump start will get the starter going, so I'm thinking it has something to do with voltage drop with the battery being so far away.

I have my negative wire connected to the frame near the battery and the 2ga positive cable running to a distribution block above the front passenger tire. The starter gets power from there. I'm going to try rerouting the 2ga wire directly to the starter, then have the wire from the starter power the distribution block. I'm hoping that helps keep the starter working.

Just wondering if you are having any of the same issues.
