Pics of topless first gen's w/ roll cages/bars

Canadian trail I was wondering about the bars you have in place of the doors. Did you fabricate them yourself or are they after market? Can you get some better close-up pics? Thanks

I made them myself using the factory hinges and latch. Just some plates to bolt to the hinges and latch and some straight 1 5/8 " tubing. I cut the lock mechanism stuff off the latch and welded a short piece of 3/8 round bar on actuator tab to grab from inside.

This is the Smitty cage. I really liked it- I was the same as your wife, I liked the clean open look, but this smitty cage looked awesome to me.

They don't make them anymore, but they do still turn up from time to time.

That was 6" suspension and 3" body, 38x15.50R16" Interco STS tires on 16x10s.

Nice set up dale :waytogo: !

My two cents on roll cages:
I totally agree with the wives on the issue; they're ugly, screws up the nice lines of the truck, heavy, expensive, etc. That's UNTIL YOU ROLL!!! Then you wish you had a NASCAR spec. roll cage-Petty bar and all!!
Just remember why they're there-to keep you safe in case you roll. They're like auto insurance; you pay for it hoping you NEVER need it  :haha: !!

It has been a while since I was last on here, but it is good to see that this thread is still going.

Dale, that is one beautiful 1st gen. Where in UT are you? For the time being, I am working on passing emissions and have put the cage off for another day. As luck would have it though, I am selling a car and might have a little $ to throw at the k5.

'72 w/ rollbar

Here are a couple pics of mine. Wrapped it in pipe insulation (the black foam stuff) then Mom made a ballistic nylon black wrap w/velcro to cover it. Gives it a beefier appearance, and protects the skull.:doah:

By the way, here's why you DO want a roll bar

Grand Island Nebraska, 1971, 80 mph and blew out the front right tire. No rollbar and no power steering..... No one injured beyond a scratch or two. No back seat and I (7 years old) was laying across the camping gear (sleeping bags, etc.) in the back. I'll never forget crawling out the back on the crushed top. God was watching out for us, no doubt!!!!!
