Pinsco63's 6.0 swap into a 91 suburban! 8-3 successful test fire!

A little more about the wiring. For folks with TBI trucks. 87-90 Uses the 7747 ECM. Except, th400 trucks use a 8747, and the 91's with the 4L80E use the 7060. There are some variations but thats the jist of it. Anyway, As intimidating as it is at first, its a relativly simple matter once you just take it piece by piece. All you have to do is pull the ECM out, and start determining what wires need saved and what can be eliminated. A service manual with chassis wiring info is really helpfull as well. This, for example, is the 7747 ECM pinouts. You can go down the list and see things like the check engine light, VSS wires, etc. that will need to be maintained in the vehicle. THe rest is just a matter of going down the list and clipping the wires out of the system until you have them down to just the wires that need to be left behind for later splicing with the new wiring.

I was out of town for the weekend but Scott has been busy on the burb. He got the new motor dropped in place, the fuel pump in, and the trans wiring/solenoid in. I'll get pics this weekend.

Wish I could do that here in Cali. but the smog Nazi's won't let you change away from an "originally optioned" engine. Pretty stupid since the 6.0 would run cleaner.

Ask dhcomp about it. He was going to be able to put a 6.0 in his 91 and he is also in CA.

Pic of converter bolted up to flex plate this was just cool to me, my trans is the first year of the 4L80E and the flex plate is 13 years newer and the holes lined right up, no problem!

It takes a little more leg work in California but it can be done. You can upgrade to newer engine must be the same make, same type auto and you must use all the smog from the donor. So if you have 2500 burban then you can use a 6.0 because it came in 2500 suburban. if you have 1500 suburban you might need to run a 5.3 because the 1500s only came with 5.3.

Not making as much progress as I would like but my ultimate goal is to just make it look as if this truck came with the 6.0 and will at least tow itself and a car trailer (empty no less) up a hill - just a few week ago the stock tbi would not even do that! hope to update this thread pretty regularly now that the heavy work is done and it is now just all the "small stuff".

If you really want it to look as if it come in there, you need to take the extra time running and looming all the wires. Just make it a nice clean install and you will be happier with your work in the end. Don't try to short cut it.

Thats his plan. Him and I are going to put in a full day on Sunday starting on the wiring. Probably wont get it all done but it should be big time headway. Im sure his will look at least as good as mine.

How are you getting vehicle speed to it?

We are just going to nicely splice into the existing vss wires. And ITHINK, the 44l80e sends vss to the computer via the output speed sensor on the trans also.

I agree with most of this, but have heard you can't put a "smaller" motor into a smog vehicle in CA. My understanding is you can't put a 5.3 in place of a 5.7, because its smaller.

Luckily, you COULD Get the 6.0L in some of the 1500 burbs....


That being said, i never did much research on my own. A lot based on stuff from Pacific Fab, or BD turnkey, and my research on these forums.

Well scott and I made some excellent progress yesterday. We were trying to get as much done as possible so not alot of time for a ton of pics and notes. But here is the pics we did get.

This is how we started. I was looking at the computer screen, telling him what pins to un pin from the connector.





At that point it was a matter of taking the wires we un pinned, out of the harness. THis is the tedious, time consuming part. Not hard, just alot of time involved.

After a while we had the engine harness pretty well wittled down. We set the intake on the table to make sure we still had the basic shape of the harness.





Then we pulled the harness out of the truck and got rid of all things computer related.



And by the end of the day, we were left with this in the engine compartment,

And this box full of left over wire.



"all thats left to do now" is botton up the pink wires, make up the fuse block, make up the OBDII port, make a few connections, and loom it.

Well, him and I worked on it fairly diligently from 11:00 to 8:00 yesterday. So since there was two of us, probably 16ish hours or there abouts. And we aren't done still. Probably another 16 or so and it will be all done and ready to run as far as wiring is concerned.
