Possible carb problems dying while driving, any ideas?

I want one with a clean body so I don't have to do much body work. I want to build it up mechanically so I can learn how to do it. I don't care if it takes time, I'm willing to wait and know what I'm driving down the road or trail is solid.
Plus my dad owns a machine shop so I have access to giant air compressors, grinders, and all the tools I can think of. He even has an engine lift for some reason. So I want a project car.

Would that be a decent place to start if I pay like 100-200? No rust and a small dent on the drivers side.

I wouldnt want to put something together from pieces if i was in your shoes. I know how most of it goes together now. But if you buy a rolling chassis here, and engine here, tranny there, tcase etc, you may not know how it all goes together correctly because you never got to take it apart.... Especially as far as wiring and stuff of that matter that has to be hooked all over to parts. Its easiest wheb you can get a complete piece even if things are bad, and take apart one piece at a time and replace with good parts.

I agree with Dueling here, you need a complete truck but if the engine is bad or tranny is bad or if everything is bad, you still have it all there, when you take it appart you learn.
As for the cost, I have put together complete trucks for under $1000, and the most expensive project I did with lift and bigger new tires was $3000.
It all depends on what you are trying to get to.
I don't put a lot of new stuff on though and I never do paint jobs, and the one frame off restoration job I did, all the work was done by me, and the cost of $4k was mostly for the paint material and the booth we had to rent to paint it.
Again, think hard on what you want in the end:
If you want a show quality K5 with new everything, you will go beyond $10k very quick.
If you want a decent looking K5 reliable in everything, you can do it under $10k it will take some time to find the right deals for new or very good condition used parts and if you start with a clean body, you can end up with a nice truck.

The only thing not there is the engine though. So this one isnt worth it? And could you help me find a decent project car in my area on Craigslist?

Would that one be a good idea? How much should I pay? And is it expensive to fix the apparent hood problem?
If you had enough knowledge, or at least had someone helping you that did, I would definitely consider trucks like this one, actually I love these because you can bargain with them and get it cheap and I already have enough engines transmission and tcases to build a few trucks, but for you to learn by yourself, you need a complete vehicle, in my opinion.
You could try this way, and you might surprize us all and learn, but you also most likely will get too frustrated because you can't figure it out and lose interest and end up selling everything for cents on the dollar.:dunno:

Now this last one seems to be promissing, might want to see more pics, or if close enough go see it in person and take lots of pics.

So get a complete one with a bad engine/tranny whatever for cheap then rebuild? And yesterday you told me I could fix up a cheap blazer...

Yeah, fix, not build from scratch.
You might be able to learn, but it's the hardest way when you haven't seen it with your own eyes when it was complete so you can put it back together.
As I said, you could surprize us but it's a big risk.
:dunno:
I bought a cheap jeep ($100) it was complete, tires were bad, and tranny was bad.
I went to pick n pull got a $100 tranny, put it in and got some bigger new tires for $375 and I had a wheeler in one week, wheeled that thing for 3 years before I broke the transmission case.

Wait was that black one just a body? And so I should look for one that's a little rough and with a bad tranny or engine then just replace the bad Part and fix it up? How hard is it to replace an engine?

If you have never done it before but can get the tools to do it, you could do it in a few days, taking your time so you don't mess it up, and asking questions here and waiting for responses.
After doing a few I can do it in 2 days.
One day to remove, and one day to put back in.
And you don't need to look for a banged up truck, I have bought complete trucks for $100 up to $500 complete but with a problem, I have also bought some with no problem for $500.
You just need to be patient, have the money ready and jump when the deal pops up.

Without a motor its not too bad. 2 bolts hold it to the motor mounts on the frame and 6 bolts to the bellhousing of the tranny. Its running all the wires and such that would be the tricky part when you dont know where they came from. But you have ck5s help and as long as you post good pics, everyone here can walk u through it pretty darn well. :thumb:

Ads that say "runs great, every gear works good but reverse and 2nd, this is a good reliable rig" crack me up. If one of the gears is going, they're all fixin to go. Call around and get a quote for a transmission rebuild on a 700r4. I'm guessing $1200 or so out your way.

$1500 + $1200 = $2700. If the body is straight that leaves you $1300 to fix stuff like the power steering up. On trucks these age, you will be continually fixing things. However, the good news is that parts are cheap, plentiful and you can do most of the work yourself.

If I were in your shoes, I would watch for something like the one you found in Lubbock. Basically a clean, unmolested (never lifted or hacked up) model that needs little to no work. Concentrate on something with a reliable engine, drivetrain, and straight body that you can drive and enjoy.

Power steering leak is no big deal, have to wonder why they have the hood bungee'd though.

Think I should go for it? For like 200-300$ imiceman44 said jimbo* has a 350 tbi he wants to sell. I also have access to hoists and I have a friend who's a good welder.

Chalet, how low do you think I could get the seller to go on the black one that's like 4500? And I'll call the guy with the white one. How much would you pay for it 800?

Its hard to tell. I'd think $3500 or so on the black one would be about right if the body is straight and he has receipts for the work. Just depends on how motivated the seller is. Also, just because it has engine and tranny "rebuilt" doesn't mean it was done right.

If the white one is clean and he has a title I'd think $800 is reasonable.

Unless your the kind of guy that enjoys wrenching and has the time, spend the extra money and get one in good shape. Look through the for sale ads on here, people that build them then sell them are usually luck to get 50% of their $$ investment back. That doesn't figure any cost for all of their labor either.

Point being its worth it to spend a little more upfront sometimes.

I actually was looking to wrench on it. And this one doesn't soud like it needs too much major work Ill call the guy up.

Even if its in good running shape, there's still be plenty to wrench on as you go. Wheel bearings, u-joints, fuel pump, alternator, water pump and stuff like that will fail and need to be replaced. Much better to have a running truck that you can drive while you are working on it.

Even if yours never breaks down, you can find plenty of **** to fix. Small lift maybe, body mounts, better shocks, Dukes of Hazzard electronic horn, etc............

I never said that.
I said he wants to sell what he bought from me, I have no idea what he wants for them.
He never said either.

Sorry I typed that wrong. I meant 200-300$ for that black blazer im not gonna buy. Not the engine I have no idea what he would want sorry for the confusion. And I guess I misunderstood I thought they were for sale.

yes they are for sale, but He never said a price. and he didn't quite list them, he posted in the thread where I was talking about them before I sold them and he said they are now on the chopping block, meaning he doesn't need them and they are for sale.:waytogo:
And yeah that black blazer $200-300 max
