Project 82 TCBF -10.13.9 - progress!!!

get a small car, cheap cheap cheap. pay cash or save for it till you can.

doing all this backwards work to get 2mpgs is a joke. getting an older cheap import that slams down 25-30 mpg is the ticket. Things such as long drives or seeing people wont scare you off from gas prices and you can have a parts runner. Older corollas are really simple to work on.

x2 for all the work you have done i think it would be a waste to just put it back to stock. if possible save allitle cash and buy yourself a little beater thats easy to work on and gets great mpg. You could drive that and think about your next move with the truck.

I think you should stay with the original plan. First your not going to save much MPG going back to stock not enough to justify what you have already spent. Second upgrades like you had in mind raises the value of your truck if you deside to sell it, at least to those of us who know going back to stock is going to lower your resale value in my mind. and third all you have done thus far will be wasted money.

If your really concerned about MPG I think you need to sell it and get a s-10 or canyon/colorado or even a toyota. You will never get realy good MPG in a fullsize blazer. they are just too heavy and square unless you do a diesel swap witch gets expencive too.

Even going to a 4.3 v6 or an inline 6 isnt going to save you much as a friend of mine did a 4.3 swap on his 86 2wd short bed for fuel milage and ended up getting the same as the 305 got. So in the end it wasnt worth the money and work he did.

Nice work so far though.

I can`t justify the purchase of the beater, as the added insurance alone makes up for the fuel costs.....

I know I won`t be saving much, but it will be enough. I don`t wheel enough to justify leaving the rig the way it is, thus my idea for making it a stocker. Unless I could see some figures in front of me proving me it won`t be worth it, I just can`t justify not doing the change.

I do NOT want to get rid of this rig because of the amount of time/money that has gone into it, and I think making it a stocker is a better alternative to getting rid of it completely, or even getting a commuter, no?

Anyone with similar setups got some figures, as far as fuel mileage goes?

Fresh 82 350,EFI, good cam, hedman elites, 3.73s, 31s

or the same as above with 4.10s, 3.73s?

I forget, but if you have a visor on the cab, take it off. It kills milage.

Wait, Ben don't you already have all the parts you need for the swap anyway?

Yeah, I do.

As I said guys, this isn`t set in stone, just something I was considering.

Not that it was easy to figure out, but after talking with some people, I`m doubting it will be worth it. I`ve never driven a stocker, but I really doubt its as fun to drive as the way my rig is setup now.

Here`s one of the convos that shut that little lightbulb off in my head:wink1:

konajoe: tough to say
speed_racer: with the way it is now, with my worn 350, I get roughly 11MPG
konajoe: but after all of that work and money would you be happy with it?
speed_racer: thats the thing
speed_racer: I`m really not sure
speed_racer: and it would be a shame if I wasnt

i dunno ben, seems like a wast eof time and money. What are you going to do with all the parts you're going to take off? sell them for less than you paid? Put em to good use. Buy another vehicle then get storage insurance for the k-5. When you want to driv ethe k-5, call the insuracne company and have them switch it. You can do it right over the phone. My buddy did this for awhile when he was switching between his DD cherokee and his trail rig cherokee

Well for what it's worth I'm getting a pretty consistent 12 MPG out of my Suburban. 100,700 or so on the TBI 350, and it does have overdrive. I have not taken it out on a long highway trip yet though.. Tires are 265/75/R16's(think they are a little larger than 31's). I do about 325-360 miles a week, it's expensive but I enjoy driving it.

Storage insurance is a great idea.. thats what I do with my K5. I call my agent when I drive it, and if they are closed I just leave a voicemail. Costs me all of $40 a year if I remember right.

Maybe when I`m more financially secure/established, etc, I`ll consider another DD, and throw Antique Plates on the rig, but for now, this is it.

In all honesty, although I`m sure I would save some money, I don`t drive enough to even justify doing it. I mean, my round trip to work is only 15-20 miles:o

It will get build as is, according to the current plans, and I`ll see what I end up with.

Ok, I'm lost... :haha:

Built or back to stock?

Your only going to get x amount of gas milage outta a truck with the aerodynamics of a brick, even if you went to stock it wouldnt be that great, hell my 02 chevy only gets 16mpg

Tom

Yeah, I kinda figured that...which was pretty obvious at first, but I somehow overlooked it...I`ll just do my best to get the best out of what I got...

Dang I love that shifter setup on your 700R4. How hard was it to set that up? And do those clevis mounts bolt to the factory spots for the front hooks? How much did Kert charge ya for those?

Shifter was a piece a cake, took all of maybe 20 minutes. I can`t wait to use it in the rig. As for the shackles, I had them drilled out to work with the holes that are already on the front of the frame. $80, IIRC.
