Project Burt - he needs some lovin'

Either tcase is good, ur 241 has a way better low, the 205 has the ability to do front wheel drive burnouts. I love my twin stick 205, it can be a pain to shift as it sometimes it needs rocked a lil bit to put in and out of 4wd occasionally, but for me, I don't need a 100 to 1 crawl ratio, I just need wheel speed and hp, which I have. On the speedo, which I'm gettn ready to do, you have to convert it to a fixed yolk and machine a hole. There is a very nice detailed write up somewhere on the site.

Most of us now use cheap GPSs as speedos. I have too many trucks with the wrong sized tires.

Not really, most I do is some light rock stuff. No need for a crawl gear really. I have the low first in my transmission, so that compensates a little. Either way I think I'll be finding a new 241 for simplicity's sake and so I have the Speedo gear without too much fuss

Carnage pictures! Damn near half the case blew out. I bet none of you have seen that much of the inside of a transfer case while it was still firmly attached to a transmission and Driveshaft.

That's some pretty bad damage son! You must have been doing some pretty high RPM when it went BOOM. I've have the planetary in an NP208 crack and split open, but never the entire case! Whoa! Maybe you should go to an NP205 if you're going to be doing that kind of action, if only for the iron case.

What part broke to cause that kind of damage? It looks like the chain is intact.

I'm pretty sure the front cv let go and bound up, and the rolling momentum of 38" boggers did me the favor of breaking it loose. Front end had the drive slugs in so the driveshaft was spinning pretty damn fast. Yeah the chain is intact, it's the only thing keeping the front output shaft and bottom half of the case attached.

I emailed a guy that has a np205 with an adapter still attached. It's supposed to be from a 70 Chevy. That would make it either 27 or 10 spline, depending on if it's from a turbo 350 or a sm465, correct? I am just curious as to what I need to ask the guy to look for.

I'm not sure when they swapped over to the 32 spline input for the SM465, but it was way after 1970. 27 spline should be for the TH350 for all years (I think). Not sure when they started using the TH400 in the trucks, but I think they all had 32 spline inputs.

yeah i think the 32 spline 465 input was like 86+. the th400 was always 32 spline as far as i know.

i ended up picking up a np208 and stock front driveshaft for $80 last night, i figure that will get me rolling until i can get all the 205 swap parts. i put up a wanted ad but i remember seeing a very early 70's suburban(3 door) at the local yard. i'm going to see if it has a 205, and i believe it was auto.

buying the whole case is my best bet really, as i can disassemble both, use the parts i need, and build a second one and sell it as inspected and re-sealed as long as the internals aren't beat to hell.

So you're planning on getting an older 205 and swapping in the 32 spline input shaft from the NP208 if you need to? I wonder if that will work. Will the older 205 be for a figure 8 pattern I wonder?

The input from an NP208 will not work in an NP205. He is planning on running an NP208 temporarily while he makes two NP205s into one. At least that is the way I read it.

Martin got it. Got the 208 for cheap so I figured why not. Even if I don't use it I can resell it in the winter for a pretty profit when plow trucks start breaking.

I finally got all the parts I need to swap in my 205. th350-205 adapter and 27 spline input shaft from thatk30guy. Stephen(spelling?) from ORD gave me a call and asked if I would like to purchase their new, longer spacer that eliminated the need for output shaft shortening. I was going to pay my buddy to make a spacer for the transfer case end of the adapter, but turns out I don't need to, thankfully!

I just need to put the new input shaft in and then I can start bolting stuff up, any suggestions as to what I should replace while I'm in there? Input/output seals? They look good, but if they're cheap and I can find them easily then they'll get replaced.

Also, has anyone seen a write up for swapping an input shaft, or even a case rebuild that i can use as a reference?

The low on em sucks, but front wheel drive burnouts are pretty cool. Im considering a doubler now as I have the correct tranny and t-case already, and a good 203 that came off a 400 with the adapter stashed at my friends house. I just cant swallow the 800$ for the adapter and then driveshafts on top of it. Choices Choices

Every now and then you can find used adapters on the internet for like $250. I remember there was one guy on this forum that took his friend's adapter to a machine shop and had them make a copy of it for a lot less than the cost of a new one. Can't remember who it was though. He must have had a piece of the right kind of aluminum already. As far as the cost of having new driveshafts made, there's nothing you can do about that. :frown1:

I meant the doubler adapter itself. And actually my friend has a mill and basically copied ORD's design sorta and made one. But still, I don't really need that lowlow enough to justify that kinda coin

Doublers are sweet for crawling but unfortunately, there isn't much crawling to do around here. Wheel speed is king in the muck, and that's mostly what I have access to. Some light hill climbs and stuff, but nothing that would really warrant a doubler.

I'm going to need to get my Driveshaft modified or replaced anyways, as I have a slip yoke 208 right now. Too bad I just got my high angle driveline cv shaft earlier this year...
