Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

the license plate on the front of your truck...Dale Earnhardt, the legendary Intimidator in his black #3

am I mistaken...?

Your paint looks good from here :dunno:

I really like the stock blue on your truck and wouldn't waste my time or money with the roll on bed liner. That may be biased because I have had bad luck with it.

The picture doesnt do the sun fade and gloss peeling any justice!:haha:

You probably don't have as many trees by you? I wouldn't spend much time painting anything I am going to wheel out here. The pics do make your truck look good.

Not many trees but still possible. I used to live in northern Minnesota so I know good pin stripping when i see it but I will say this. the brush out here is down right mean and nasty, they dont call it ironwood for nothing!

Either way it needs a fresh look.

And the winner for who guessed what gear ratio the new 14BFF had........

NOBODY!:sign19:

3.21s (45 ÷ 14)

BUT... the center section is beautiful looking, no burnt smell and the gear oil even still has a bit of a gold tint to it. The outer parts of the housing is really clean. The only issue is the shock mounts. The are the correct width but they appear to hang down about another inch or so from the newer housing and my 91.

Plan then is to strip this one use the big brakes from the other housing, keep the hubs and shafts for spares and offer the housing to the axle gods:popcorn:

3.21's in a 14bff?! Never heard of it. Was this out of some "high fuel economy" model that GM tried back then? Such a tall gear would be basically worthless in a 1-ton as far as towing and hauling is concerned.

Like I said, Its from a 73 2wd, 4spd manual with 454. The gears are marked 72. so it was probably in response to the fuel crisis in the 70s.

From what I have read these are the albino of 14B gears. I may toss them up in the classifieds and see if any needs to give them a good home.

are you sure its 14 on pinion?? cuz 12 on the pinion would be 3.73

Dang man pretty cool, never seen that ratio in any of the factory literature before

Ive cut up 20-30 2wd 3/4 and 1-tons the most common was 4.10 the next being 3.73 and a few 4.56 open carriers . Would be a nice gear set with a turbo 6.2/6.5 sm465 in a 2wd reg cab srw 1-ton parts getter..........

Got bored at the shop so I used a GoPro Hero2 Camera and did a time lapse of the 14 Bolt axle tear down.
