Project MULE - Expedition build on a 1991 1500 4x4 Suburban

We start mounting the roof rack in tonight. After the rack mounts themselves are mounted we will then take the roof rack off and then paint the roof with the elastomeric roof coating. While the rack is off I will be wiring it for lights. mean while the wife will be assembling the front expedition winch bumper.

there a benefit to the coating vs white paint?

it flexes with the metal, goes on thicker as it is rubberized (I think). it can withstand the sun far longer then regular paint. One guy on the jeep forum tried just regular flat white paint and then he tried the roof coating and notice a big difference. It actually insulates. I know because I had to bolts that went straight thru my jeep Cherokee roof to mount a CB and that Cb bracket became a heat sink. After I coated the roof I could actually touch and hold the bracket and it was cool to the touch.

Its not much more of cost then using regular paint. its more durable against the weather then regular paint.

you just have to be a bit more mindful when working with it cause it does like to stick to stuff.

I am going to try and get it done as a write-up so I will have pics.

its not any rocket science just tape off with painters tap where you want the borders to be, then brush or roll on let dry then apply two more coats. remove tape.

Tape
paint
serve
enjoy

:D

Did you do any prep work prior to painting yours? I'd assume you'd want to light scuff it with light sandpaper or a brillo pad or something. Right?

Very unproductive day. This Chest cold is still kickin' the crap out of me!

I was able to get the rack on the roof and already I need to make modifications for a couple of the mounts as the roof has a slight bow from front to back

Nice progress. What is your plan to coat the roof rack?

The rack will get a good shot of Epoxy paint in Gloss Black. I would have preferred a more satin, maybe even a flat but epoxy paint only comes in Gloss white black or Tan. Its a Rustoleum spray paint for Appliance paint repairs. Once it cures its pretty durable.

hmmm

those vents don't look that hard to make, other than the louvers...wonder if a baffle of some kind would work...I like the idea of secure vents..

Welding the expedition bumper together. Wife took some shoot while I was busy, didn't even know until she told me. Enjoy

Ha! you did your roof like I want to. I want to keep a border of green around the edges to maintain a stock look. That and I think having a completely white roof on a dark green rig wouldn't look too good...

Keep up the good work!:waytogo:

For future reference in regards to a 1991 Chevy Suburban (maybe from 81-91) The two front door striker nuts in the pillars are NOT captured. The two striker nuts for the rear doors ARE captured.

Your results may very.

I found that out a while back. It's the only reason I haven't replaced my striker bushings yet.
