Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
I might just make it a flat rack for the time being. Until I get a house with a bigger shop. That’s really a bummer. Although if I build it so the walls can hinge open and shut this wouldn’t be an issue. I definitely can’t store anything on it while it’s in the garage. Hmm lol

Are you planning on throwing a roof top tent up there or just camping gear?

If a RTT is in the plans then putting walls up on the side of the rack will push the tent up higher and create a dead space you can't access with the tent on.

not a roof top tent. Probably just a small 1-2 person tent. Just want it sturdy enough to sleep on.

That does give me more reason to make the walls on hinges and able to fold down.

Gotcha. My buddy that goes with us on the desert trips is actually making a rack to carry his newly acquired roof top tent on. Instead of bolting a rack to the fiberglass top he's building a rack that comes down the sides and will bolt onto the top of the bed rails The brackets will sandwich between the top and bed rails. One front and one in the rear tied together with front to back stringers. The rack should be an inch above the top.

I’ve thought about that as well but I really dislike the look. If I had a tube bender I might try to bend it to follow the top lines. Wouldn’t even need the hard top at that point as well.

That's how they do lumber racks for trucks with toppers on them.

He's a big boy and the tent itself is a hard shell so it's 150# at least. He didn't want to chance the top cracking or breaking with him up there. He's going with square tubing and figured the angles to hug the curve from the side to the top at 120°.

Funny story I think of every time I use a pair of dikes.

At work a few years back they changed the word dikes to “side cutters” to appease social justice warriors. I guarantee a non-value-added salary employee, mini-big head, thought this up. We can actually get written up for calling a tool by the name it was given. Just thought I would share. I’ll never not call them dikes. They would have to actually be on the airplane to ever catch anyone saying it anyways. Funny how there are people who build the planes and people who have never touched a tool in their lives telling mechanics how to do their jobs.

When i was in the Army we were doing inventory on our tool boxes and we called the "side cutters" dykes, well a sgt was there and threw a fit about our language and using the correct term, the very next thing was "sweet lips" pliers LMAO

I didn’t strip it. Just hit it with scotch bright and acetone. Good enough for me. Looks like a rhino job from 20ft away lol
