Pzuzu The Isuzu Build (RIP)

Hmmmm Im mulling over ditching the back seats in this thing to make more room for gear... Really wanna get a water tank, propane tank, and air tank on board.

No progress but I picked up parts today to start working on the rear.

Scored an explorer 8.8 for $100.

Picked up some leaf springs for the back from a tahoe for $100. They're 54" leaf springs. I was about to start pulling 64s when I grasped just how huge the damn things are so I went to my truck with a tape measure. Low and behold it would have been a huge pain in the ass to make them work, plus the front would be hanging really low. I've heard good things about the Tahoe springs and like the design, they seem alright stouter than the springs from the square bodies and the ones I got were practically new.

Picked up a motor today. $300 for a dressed OM617 Turbo with 180,000 miles. Sounds like a lot and Im still getting used to that being low mileage but these things dont start getting tired until 300,000 plus.

Got lash the valves and run a compression test and then start it on the floor this week. If the compression doesnt come up good I'll use this motor for parts and mock up.

Im excited to say the least... :woot:

woot! glad to see an update on this build. what is that motor out of?

My buddy has one of those in his 81 300d.

It is a pretty peppy motor for what is is. I think his benz has 250k miles on it.

Its from an 80-85 Mercedes 300td. 5cyl, full mechanical, 125hp 170 ftlbs.

Stock pump tweaked, more boost, intercooler, and injector nozzles will give you 150-175 horse and around 225 ftlbs. That's my plan. If its not enough I'll get a pump built which with a bigger Turbo could do 300 HP plus.

From what I've read this motor is way peppier with a stick behind it alone.

Little project update post Christmas. Lifes been a little hectic. The wife and I have decided to give ourselves a time frame of 2-3 years to get the **** out of Jersey and move down to the Shenandoah Valley in VA where we both really want to be. I switched jobs about a month and a half ago and went to work at my friends masonry company. With that we wound up devising the plan for us to move into his house so we can all save some money. So we've been going like mad building an apartment (mostly just adding a bathroom with plumbing under a slab :doah:) in his basement so we can all live comfortably under the same roof.

So now we're almost through the holidays. The wife got a really good raise and with moving out of our apartment at the end of the week we're going to be nearly plus $1500 a month in our pocket. Part of our escape from NJ plan includes tying up loose ends. That means finishing the trooper and not starting anymore projects :D

So I decided to take advantage of the holiday sales at polyperformance. I ordered 4.56 gears, install kit, OX locker, and super 88 kit. Basically everything to build my rear. Only thing left to get it under the truck will be to call up dutchman and get some 6 lug shafts made to the super 88 specs and then sell my super 88 shafts. I saved 13% so my bill came down $234 to $1721 after shipping.

Obviously with the OX locker Ill be getting a sweet beefy cover too. Im hoping to get the body on the frame once the rear axle is hung. Then Ill bolt the diesel up to the toy trans and start getting it fit into the truck.

I was wondering if superior offered 6 lug shafts with the super 88 kit. I guess that is my answer since you had to go to dutchman to get them. Superior doesnt offer just the c clip elim without the shafts?

thats lame. I wanted to go to 6lug just for ease of rim swappage with buddies. looks like 5x5.5 it is.

Yeah I preferred to be 6 lug but wasn't even planning on running an 8.8 when I bought my wheels. I would have grabbed some dodge hubs for the Dana 44 had I known.

Where did you order the red handled lock latch? I need to get one, and I like that design a lot.

Parts started coming in to build the rear. Got my gears and locker. Install kit should be here this week and hopefully Ill be getting one of the 4 super 88 kits that will be coming into stock at superior this week.

Can check upgraded diff cover off the list too.

Im going to be running the ox with their electrical actuator system. Really dont desire buying a $150 long ass cable. Electric makes it easy while still being reliable inside the diff with no added motors or weakness to make it all fit.
