rcfatcats 78k5- Boostedk5 2.0

Where is this?
I see Pennington and North NJ in profiles... I'm down here off the AC expressway.... I work in Lawrenceville ... 62 mile commute each way.
Yeah i live right outside of Lawerence. Numidia is in pa about 2.5 hours from Trenton.

So got some updates.
Started off on the new chassis with the beginning of the full convertible conversion. My dad and I where in search of a hardtop for his full vert. Found one in south jersey and went and bought it. Luckily for me it came with another set of full vert doors and a windshield frame along with misc. hardware. So naturally if dad has a full vert I'm gonna have one too.

Everything laid out. The new chassis stripped and waiting in the background.
I cut two old sun visors and used the mounts as alignment tools for the new frame.

Support/alignment piece being welded in

Next I measured down 12 inches from the seam where the drip rail starts and made my cuts. Did the same on the full vert windshield frame to match.

All cut

New frame getting tacked in place.

Shot of the b-pillar cuts. Still have some trimming here

And the full vert doors hung

Unfortunatly my cuts weren't perfect so gonna have some gaps to fill

And that's about as far as I got.

Hers just some pics of the new chassis

More to come!

So I'm in debate on reinforcing the frame and looking for opinions. Do I
Box it? (Diy4x frame box kit)
Plate it on the outside?(make my own)
Or leave it and add in extra cross members along with the cage and boat side.

Just So everyone knows my cage, boatsides, and body will be hard mounted to the frame no bushings.

A cage will add more rigidity to the frame then boxing if done right. That being said I plated the front of my k5 with 3/16. Made mounting the hoops for the shocks real easy.

Links or leafs?

I think I would build my own frame from rectangle tube before boxing a frame again. It's a ton of work.....

I gotcha. Yeah the plan is for the cage to tie into 8 different points of the frame. 4 on each side. The boat side's will also tie into both the frame and cage at 4 more separate points.

honestly I'm in debate still on suspension. I'm leaning towards leAfs right now but if I can save up some extra cash in the next month or too I might link it.
I was Toying with the idea of building a complete frame out of 2x3 or 2x4 but I'm apprehensive of being able to build it and keep it square without a frame table.

If you have a plasma, time, and some plate laying around go for it.
Yeah I have a plasma and a bunch of 3/16 and 1/8 lying around so plating it may be the way to go.

I guess all that being said I really gotta finalize my suspension plans to be able to decide frame reinforcement.

I cut cardboard templates and traced those over to steel plate and plasma cut them. Then trim (grind) to fit from there. However you have to plan out your crossmembers and those that need to be removed with some sort of attachment points. I chose to weld flanged nuts on the inside of the frame before I boxed it so I can bolt skids, crossmembers, bumper tie-ins etc. There's a ton of pics in my build thread if you want to take a look at what I did.

Read through your thread and I can see what you mean by time consuming. I've been discussing my ideas with some of the guys at work also (two in the neto drag series who have built a couple of chassis and one who is in the Offroad world) and I'm starting to lean towards the route of just building a frame out of box tube. If done right the benefits definitely seem to outweigh the cons. And after searching through the threads here a lot of guys mention that they wish they went the square tube frame route.

In the mean time my slow steady stream of parts has begun. @Deuling is making some badass cage tie in plates so naturally I put in an order. These things will definitely help the structure of my cage to frame connections and I may order some more for the boatsides once I get further along and see how things turn out

Hoping to finish up the full vert conversion this weekend and weld in some temporary braces so the body can be lifted off the frame.

If you're on Instagram look for Matt Kime, he just finishing up a rectangle box frame.

Kert at DIY4X built one as well, there's a thread on here somewhere.

Kerts build has S.E.R.E (im pretty sure that's it) In the title in case anyone wants to search for it.
Good to know just started reading through that one. I missed a lot of new threads since I fell off the forum for a bit.

Yeah I follow Matt. That truck is absolutely sick! Love the bed he just built for it.

My goal was to build one, but i found a decent frame I just decided to plate and use the damn thing rather than get caught up in the build.
Yeah I think the square tube frame will work best for me cause now I'm really leaning towards setting the motor back more and linking the truck. Figured if I'm gonna do this a second time around why not go for gold and build it like I've been dreaming about. Been following Matt kimes build for a while on instagram and that truck is really inspiring. Gives a lot of different ideas

Don't worry folks haven't fell off again. Just have nothing to update this month. June/July is the busiest time of year for me and time to work on the truck is minmal. Just enjoying family vacation this week and enjoying all the dunefest pics on the interwebs. Stay tuned cause there will be some progress made in august on this rig.
