Rdn2blazer 73’ K5 build thread (random pics)

Actually, I was thinking of getting some heat treated 1/2 in rod and instead of using bolts for the seat mounts, I was thinking of rods that ran thru one tab to the other with a hindge pin on the console side and a "T" handle on the door side. So I could quickly pull the pins and pull the rods and pull the seat out very easy. The tabs line up very well. Do you think 1/2 cold rolled bar would be strong enough?? The tab holes are like .502 to .505 so I dont think it would feel loose or rattle at all.

i'd try to do something like Stress proof. Double shear type mounting?

Alot of the aftemarket seats have very small tabs to hold them in. Bolts in single shear. In the end the seat belts do the job. If they do it soon enough the pin will never see larger forces.

The Mastercraft seats have 4 3/8 slots for mounting to the seat bottom. My brackets I made were drilled 1/5 to match the mounting tab with a 1/2 in hole. That should be strong enough I would hope. I gusseted the tabs too on one side with two tabs each. Plus with the belts doing their job like you said.

I would think you'd be fine. Take some pics when you get it together!!

Are you going to tie the windshield frame in to the cage? They are so flimsy.

I have seen it done but had'nt thought of doing that. Thanks for the idea. I'm building the cage to be able to be removed as a Pod. So if I do tie the windshield frame to the cage it will have to be bolted somehow so I can remove an adapter plate then pull the cage. I will start looking at it to get some ideas for sure.

For sure, I will. If I could just get my 70' chevy sold I could finish this damn thing. Money is TIIIGGHHT.

Very nice. What are the grab handle diameters? Is it tube or pipe? I ask that since the dies or soo expensive. Makes me think not worth the money for a few bends in a smaller diameter?

Grab handles are 1 1/4 diameter, my cage is all DOM tube except for a couple of non structure pieces. Those are HREW. There is probably a couple of feet that are HREW cause I ran out of DOM and just needed to finish a couple of small pieces. I did all bending manually, no sissy hydro for me. :D:haha:

Where has this thread been? I can't believe I just found it. The cage is looking good. I have a related question though. Who made the console?

Why isn't the cage Titanium. I think that is the only way you could make it any nicer. Nice work!!!

Thank you. I need to get back at it. I took a good amount of time away from it. Now as I'm geting the major itch to get after it again, 7 days a week work schedual starts next week damnit . As usual, Money but no time, or time but no money. Why can't it be lots of money and all the time in the world.

it is realy nice cage and from looking at his pics, i think i can build just the front part of the cage w/similar bends and triangulation to fit inside a pu cab!

A few recent pics. Started actually working on it again.

Looks pretty sturdy. Ar you still able to run the top?

Yep, Built the cage inside just for that reason. At the tightest it has an 1/8 gap, Thats at the Piller right behind the driver/pass seats. At the rear, as you can see the cage tapers, clearence at the rear is about 3 to 4 inches.
