No, not thought out, I am winging it as I go along really. I do think about it before I actually bend, but I had not thought "yea, this is how it will look". Just trying to make sure it looks good and is triangulated though. I just cant believe how long it takes to fab stuff like this. With just life in general there is times I have not touched it in 2 or 3 weeks. I hate that. going to try to get more tube this week.

Supposed to go dirt bike riding this weekend but I dont even want to go. I just want to work on my cage. I might just pass on riding.

I actually wish I could start a shop and build trucks and fab work and parts. But its a tough bussiness to be in. I will stick to my day job. I dont know how anyone could make money bending manually. Thanks man.
 
Sure thing.

By the looks of it you had the same idea I've been thinking about doing with the dash...to just cut it out. Run a couple of bars from side to side and use aluminum panels to mount gauges/switches/knobs and such.

Yup, thats exactly what Im doing. The dash tube will be 1 1/4. Dont need 2" just to support the dash stuff. I have a 1 1/4 die.
 
I love the lines around the door as well as in the rear corners:bow:

I think I am going to wind up around 220ft of 2inch DOM in mine. I also have used most of one stick of 1 3/4dom... The bending isnt what bugs me, Its the notching. Looks good,

Seems as though a "V" would give better access to the rear seats between the front seats rather than a "^". Would you get pics of the seat mounts with the seats out of the blazer so I/we could see the mounting points etc. The tube around the bottom of the door openings for the seat mounts looks very good. :bow:

Yes, agreed, Im going to do a mock up with something to replicate the "V" and see how it looks. The only thing with the "V" is I dont want it to interfere with the seat location at the top of the seat. I want the seat to lean back just a bit, so I need to mock up before I bend and tack in. I want to land on the floor structure on center of the floor where its double thick, like Rene did his. :D

About upper mid height of each leg of the "V" with be the harness tube to the "B" pillar legs.
 
Your pictures are giving me impure thoughts about my blazer again... Beautiful work there, you really should be proud. How in the heck do you get to weld the seams that are up against the body? Do you have to unbolt the entire cage and pull it to finish the hard to get to spots?

Yes, thats what I will have to do. Thats why I will get ALL the tube work in and welded as much as I can, I will pull the hard top off first and weld the top of the cage before I pull it out, then when it comes out I can weld the tough spots on the sides.

Hopefully the heat from the welding wont Draw the cage around and miss-align the mounting plate holes. I will probably just weld one or two spots at a time and let it cool, then move to the next couple weld spots. That my theory anyways.

I planned for it to come out, I hope it is able to once its all said and done, its gonna be tight.
 
Couple of new pics. I finally got around to fitting in the top bars over the rear passenger area. I realized I F'ed up though. Its not a big deal but I should have fit this bar in first BEFORE I welded the hoops in place. I had to cut one notch tang off so I could fit the tube in. I will just weld the cut piece in then weld a plate as a cap over it. (See 4th pic)

I figured cutting the "inside" notch tang would be best for strength, Like it will even matter, but I had to come up with some theory. I added a mounting point to the top of the wheel well. I thought about this for a long time and was undesided if I was going to but after seeing AddicterOfroad's cage I liked how it looked so I went ahead and added it. I widened the driver well, still need to do the pass side so I can get the other well mount point done.


I started making the pieces of tube that tie the two hoop stringers together. I have the one over the "A" in the centers done and Im going to add a couple more to each so split the spacing between the center tube and hoops for support. Added a tube at the kick panel area from the floor bar that ties into the door hoop bar, Thiangulates that good.

pics continued. The reason for the offset wheel well mount (2nd pic) point is so I can remove the cage and not get hung up on the bed rail. It should clear by about 1/2 inch. otherwise a straight piece of tube would have been easier to cut and fit in.

you are one cage makin mofo, looks ****ing aweseme! i hope you never have to test it out. but how are you gonna get the top off with all that in the way? i normally stand up under it and walk it off the truck.

Thanks man, I appreciate the compliment. I cant wait to get the top off it and see what it looks like. I need more tube BAD. Going to try to get some this week or the next.
