Restored back to original rigs

There are a couple pictures posted, i think just to show off. Nothing close to stock...

If you have a 75,000 chrome paint job, sitting on 15 inches of lift, chrome everwhere.. it may not fit in here.

Post it not very many are all stock any more.
I redid my interior/body as close to stock as I could get it, but the rest started getting up graded the first week I owned new in 1986.

I agree stock suspension and drivetrain suck on these trucks, I love to see stock appearing body and Interiors with upgraded running gear

Lets see it 88Jimmy :D

85' GMC C30 6.2, th400, 14ff. Not 4wd, but its a square body. Inherited it from my grandpa after it had sat for 10+ yrs and slowly redid it. Body work was my dad and I's summer project. Not original red, but it is a factory 85' GM truck color. Restoration thread is in my signature, feel free to ask questions. The before picture makes it look like it was in great shape rust wise, it wasn't...

true true. it works out well that other gm trucks can provide the ultimate in drivetrain upgrades. still all stock gm parts. just a diffarent model, but all gm no less, with maybe a small lift and a wheel/tire upgrade. you cant leave it all stock. what fun is that. then you wont drive it.

Other than a small lift and tires, what would you all suggest doing for small upgrades? Does everyone leave those stock brakes on their trucks with bigger wheels and tires?

You're confusing "drive" with "hard core wheel". Plenty of us drive/use/wheel stockish trucks on here. Most of us started with a stock truck on 31's and the nearest muddy 2 track. Some of us don't feel like completely redoing our trucks so we can drive 3 hours or more to go wheeling anywhere appropriate for their improved capabilities.
Some of us also like nice, simple, capable stockish rigs.

Steering box brace(s).
XJ steering shaft.
Check your seat mounts for cracks.
Good shocks, ditch the factory duals in the front if they are there.
Gears appropriate for the tires and a real locker in the rear.

Stock brakes are fine for 33's or so. Maybe upgrade to the towing package rear brakes if you have the small brakes. I've been noticing a trend relating to rear discs - used to be everyone HAD to have discs but now a lot of folks are basically saying it wasn't worth it.

That is me to a "T"! Except I wanted both.

Minus the big blocks right?:waytogo:

I used to be all about built, lifted, tall, huge tired trucks. Then I learned that having to drive hours to go wheeling anywhere challenging sucked. Also that a foot of wheel travel does you no good if you don't live somewhere you can hit the dunes every weekend. Rotating tires sucks when you have 130lb tires. Also that it doesn't take a lot of lift to make a truck too tall to fit under a hypothetical 7' garage door headjam.
I also learned I'd rather have a capable, stockish truck that can be driven daily and used to tow a trailer and hit some weekend wheeling than a big, gnarly tired, flexy suspension truck that I can't use for anything practical, is more of a handful to drive, and local wheeling isn't any challenge for it. Oh, and has to sit outside because it doesn't fit in the garage.

Oh yeah, and while nothing is cheap keeping them stockish is cheaper than replacing and upgrading EVERYTHING about them.
I marvel at the money I've blown on prior trucks compared to mine sitting right now because I can't scrape together a couple hundred extra to make sure it's fixed and not leaking.

Fabricate the braces? Or is there somewhere that you can buy some?
I did ditch the shocks, they were about to fall apart.
Haven't inspected the floor yet but I know there is some rust in the back, so good idea for check the seat mounts.

Since I'm just starting on this thing, can you just go to the parts store and tell them you want new rear brakes and ask for a heavy duty set or something? Or does upgrading to a towing package cause you to have to change everything back there?
