Richard's Funky Fire Truck

Would you consider a ranger box in Fire Truck like you did on Blazer? Why or why not?

No, it doesn't shift quick enough and the syncros are not as effective as anything else I have ever shifted. I hoped I'd be able to shift quickly in and out of overdrive all the time and it just doesn't work like that.

You have to pre plan shifts for hills and if you miss it I'm in the same boat as before I had it. I still end up waiting for 2nd. Honestly, I haven't really said it but it's the most disappointing thing I've done to the truck.

Get a gear vendor mine only shifted into od as I hit a certain speed in 3rd but I could hit the button to manual and it would split whatever I was in to a higher gear then just hit it off as you shift into the new gear. I just put the pedals in my crew cab sunday :dunno: so I'll let you know how it does with the 4 speed and a tired 454

Didn't you say you already had future plans beyond that?

Are you referencing the gears as L 1 2 3?

The Rockies are easy compared to Pennsylvania. Those western highways are cut smooth.

That said, I never got out of 2nd going uphill out there. Sometimes I was even in low on back country roads and trails where I should have been able to go 30 mph. Some of that is because my 6.2 has so much torque that I was afraid to open her up.

All that said, if I had a 4500 in my garage there is a good chance my truck would be in pieces.

I was referencing them as 1-2-3-4. We did 200 miles on a variety of road types (from trail to major highway). Some flat, some not. 4th gear was only used on fairly flat ground.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by living at a low altitude with fairly flat roads. But I thought he was shifting a bunch. And a few more gears would not have hurt anything...

So I'm still not sure I want the wide gear splits on my expedition truck. How was your trip out to Pike's Peak? Were you wishing for closer gear splits?

:haha:

Wade said it was the longest drive up Pikes Peak he'd ever been on. Everytime I tried to get out of low I had to get back in it again.

More gears means more shifting in my mind. That also is what I consider a good thing. I want to shift into all the in between spaces lots more.

I drive stick in the city so shifting is always happening. I constantly shift.

Need a turbo for that altitude.

Martin

N/A diesel is much more reliable than carb so I had small victories in my brain. My truck did have to turn over a couple times before starting at the top of pikes peak.

I think I mentioned that I'm sitting on a turbo setup

Yeah. He told me the same thing. That didn't encourage me to stick with the wider spacing in the 4500.

Turbine swap would be nice, and I have a 6.5TD setup sitting in a box, but everyone and his mom tells me that it won't fit with the factory A/C box.

Aw cool, I've been meaning to put an inverter in Fire Truck. I probably won't put it in the engine bay though.

What's A/C?

Something that I regularly think about removing, but haven't quite talked myself into doing.

I do like the setup that my K10 has, with the A/C under the dash. Minimal clutter under the hood makes it a nice candidate for a 6.5 turbo swap. But it doesn't happen to be the truck that I want to boost at this point.

The M1009 looks like a decent candidate for it, but the extra battery and wiring on that side start reducing the working space. So it will keep sitting in a box until I decide which rig needs it most badly.

I finished up running the wiring harness for my sidetracked pods.

The harnesses have plenty of length.

I have some orange lenses for them. I like the clear at the moment, but I may swap them out in the future.

Thought about mounting them in the grill cut outs?

I already had holes drilled in the brush guard where I mounted them. I did use a little strapping to set them back.

I want to keep the jump port. Then I can jump the trucks off each other if I get a cable.

I may put something else in the other hole. I'm missing my numbers and blackout light.

I need a new grille, trim, and headlight surrounds at some point. These ones are in much worse shape than they look. The grille only has two mounts left. It's held in by zip ties to keep it decent.

Ahhhh...forgot both of yours are still 24v. Do you have a slave cable?

Big Ugly's grille was all FUBAR too. I got a cheap aftermarket replacement, cut out the holes, and spray bombed it flat black.

I don't have the cable and for some reason the surplus guys want big $$ for them.
