Rocco's 77 K5 Blazer - Frame Off 6.2/6L80 Build

You could maybe run the pinion a hair shallower.

Cool. I'm going to remove 0.005" from the pinion shim pack and then try and loosen the backlash to 0.008-0.010" (this is what is engraved into the ring gear). I'll post up some pics of the new contact pattern hopefully later this evening.

Hmm, not sure if this looks better or worse than the previous pattern. It does look a bit more centered to me, but I would appreciate any feedback!

I decreased the pinion depth by 0.005" and decreased backlash by 0.002".

Pinion Shim: 0.030"
Backlash: 0.008"

After looking at tons of contact patterns online, seems my pinion depth may now be too shallow? o_0

Needs to be deeper in the ring gear if you can. I have run worse for 100k miles with no issues.

I was thinking the same, I'll try removing 0.0025" from the shim stack which will put me at 0.0325" and see how things look. Thanks for sticking with me on this! :waytogo:

Wipe the outside top of the teeth off so the edge shows better in the pictures. Can not see the depth well.

Alrighty! Pinion deeper by 0.0025".

Pinion Shim: 0.0325"
Backlash: 0.0085"

I think this looks the best so far. Does the pattern seem like it's riding a bit high on the tooth, though? Or am I good? :)

That is the one.

Yup! What the old guy said! That will work.

Great! I ran with it and pulled everything apart for hopefully the last time, cleaned everything up, and figured out the proper shims for the crush sleeve eliminator to get around 15 in/lbs of preload on the pinion. Installed the seal, pinion and yoke, and finally the carrier.

I ran one last contact pattern to make sure everything still looked OK.

I think I'm happy with this. Thanks for everyone's help! Now on to the 14 bolt! :D

Loving the work done. Wish I could do the same with my '77 but my roll cage is welded to the frame through the body interior. Bought this Blazer about a month ago

I would like to ask if you can post photos (if you have them) of your exhaust from engine to tailpipe. I am having issues determining what to do with my exhaust. Currently my exhaust terminates immediately after my Mufflers underneath the vehicle near the midpoint. It is my intention to install a new exhaust that will run from the engine out the traditional exits after the rear tires. There are few if any kits available and I will probably have to be frankensteining exhaust system from early Chevy truck Kits and various universal straights and Bends. also, would you happen to have any original documentation on your Blazer. Pennsylvania is giving me fits while I try to get it inspected and make it roadworthy. I have a post in the general forum regarding the original equipment in missions on the 1977 Blazer with the 400 engine. I have the original repair manual and the emission schematic doesn't even show an EGR valve. It is my argument to my particular Blazer never had a catalytic converter or an EGR. I'm trying to find somebody with a similar VIN number that also has documentation from the factory.

My blazer currently has a bored over 454 engine (468ci) with rusty headers and a leaky exhaust system. I need to get new headers along with the new exhaust system.

Any helpful response is greatly appreciated.

Before I tore it apart, my Blazer was emissions tested and registered with no issues here in Phoenix, AZ. My truck also originally came with a small block 400 and no emissions equipment. Here in AZ, they check the exhaust emissions on a roller, and also do a visual inspection. Each time they would get a bit confused about there not being catalytic converters or an EGR valve, but they were always able to determine that the vehicle never came from the factory equipped with these things. I think this is based on the GVWR (6000+).

In any case, I was running long tube headers with dual pipes all the way back. Again, no cats. No crossover either. Here's everything after I yanked it. minus the long tubes:

Perfect. Thank you. That is along the lines of what I was looking for. Hope I can sell that info to the Pennsylvania authorities.

On a different topic. I love the black seats. I acquired a set of Mazda sport seats but I like the looks of the Town&Country seats more. What were the issues mounting them/installing them. How did you get the correct height?

Also, regarding my back seat, I was looking at putting in the 3rd row seats from the same Town&Country or even a 2015'ish Tahoe or similar Chevy vehicle. Any consideration for changing your back seat to something similar to your front seats?

I am also considering installing 2 captains seats in place of my back seat. The Town&Country has 2nd row captains seats that look great.
