Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

yup... well, not really flux, but the soot, etc.. makes the primer stick really well...
Ahhh I figured that but had to ask.

For the record I didn't see anything you guys don't see. When I said above post I meant postS.

it was a perfect question.... yeah, i was hammered and reading into things incorrectly.. i blame the intraweb not conveying convo's well, and bourbon...

it's all good....

Paul, I totally sympathize with what you were saying / feeling. It can really get annoying to have people nit-pick stuff that you've spent a lot of time on.... Kind of trivializes the work you do and doesn't take into account the HOURS of time spent considering all the options that led to a particular decision.

On the flip side, no matter how much time I spend writing up my thought process in my build updates I skip over SO many of the details that I suspect people just don't see how many things were considered (and discarded) for one reason or another.

I also think that people who really love your build just want to feel "involved" somehow... It can be a pretty cool feeling for a guy who doesn't have your skills or resources to make a suggestion that ends up getting used on your build. :waytogo: Kind of like a "one of my ideas ended up on the Ryoken build" type thing..... Viewers invest themselves on some emotional level in your build and I think it's just human nature to want to somehow feel like they are able to contribute to it....not just passively watching the process.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong? :dunno: Ive been hitting the coffee pretty hard this morning!! :haha:

Rock on brother, your work is beyond reproach and we both know you are going to totally blow people away with the finished product!

I love suggestions.. that's why I often ask for them, I greatly respect the forums input.. I may come up with some neat ideas, but you guys have definitely helped with some of the details.. there have been many of them over the yr's that I've incorporated from being convinced to go countersinks over buttons on my K5 consoles to reminding me I have a pair of spindles to color combo's, yada..

being that one was right after I finished doing it all day, it just sat wrong in my buzzed brain... I was wrong, I knew that was not the intention at all, but felt a need to stand up for the prior 10 hr's of work...

and thanks to everyone for appreciating what I build and putting up with my crazy arse.... :screwy:

hopefully I can get the LAB ™ over 10 degrees today and lay some primer down...

:waytogo: pretty sure you hit the nail on the head Greg! I don't have the time/money/fab skills to take on something like this yet so watching these builds are what keep me busying my @$# so that some day I can attempt something like this. Keep on trucking Paul!

:waytogo: pretty sure you hit the nail on the head Greg! !

he always does, him and Rene are 2 of the most insightful fella's I know...

whereas I'm an ogre flinging typewriters at people... :pimp:

sheesh, it's chilly.. fired up the heater and it chuckled at me and said "are you serious?" :haha:

gonna be a few hr's till it's reasonable down there... but I wanna get down and clean up the sandbox and LAB ™ in general for primer at the end of the day.. need to scuff the green thoroughly too... also wanna go outside and remount the front tire on Mutt before snow comes tomorrow...

Ryoken reminder - verify that backspace for buying a new wagon wheel to ship to Kert prior to remounting... :doah: :haha:

ok, for future ordering, my front rims are these...

16.5 x 9.75 x 4.75

at some point, (once the alum and toolboxes are here, probably june) I'll order one to direct ship to Kert to put the stiffener/simulock on... and get another Baja (maybe 3 if I can swing it to have some rotatitional extras)..

This is exactly my build at the moment, I have taken a ton of crap for it. Even more that work has halted over life. I also took on a very big project with more money then brains. It takes me extremely long to get something done because of the thought process or having to learn a new skill...

Sorry Paul for the clutter, I appreciate your builds and look forward to daily updates either building or knowledge shared.

nah, it's cool... my idiocy brought it up, so it's "on topic" :haha:

alrighty....... :D

feel like I'm back painting cement mixer frames again! :doah: :haha:

time/material consuming.... went thru a 1/2 gal of primer getting it all coated in jet mode on my back...

still a whole bunch of panel mount tabs (probably about 42 to 46), box mounts (24) and support bars to weld in, but I'm glad I got it overall coated now...

Looks awesome man! I'm sure I've read what you have planned for it but can't remember do I'll ask. What are you going to use the space down in the coffin between the boxes for?

thanks... good question...

about the first 30" behind the cab is for the fuel cell, which will go up to about 5" below the back window...... than there will be a removable panel for about 15" to expose the gooseneck... than the back 50" or so will be a permanent (well bolted in) panel....

so the majority of the time everything behind the fuel tank will be just general carry around space when not goosenecking... it's about 30" x 65" or so....

being the "upper" deck areas above the boxes are only for hauling big type stuff that I can ratchet strap down, most things I need to carry around will go down in there.. whether that's a case of oil home from work, motor, etc, etc...

I'd like to work in some kind of vise somewhere, but that's been a secondary thought and something I'll figure out/add once it's done.. kinda like the boom hoist...

Cool. A vise would be nice to have on a row rig. If I ever get a car trailer I'm gonna add one to it. Really could have used one a few years ago when the rear joint on my K5 went bad on the way to the trail. Its rough to change one using rocks for support.

nice, hadn't even contemplated a receiver hitch type one... that may work very well for me, thanks... :waytogo:

yeah, I say that, yet I'm still using the busted up one in my shop that I broke 5 yr's ago and haven't replaced... :doah:

eh, Mutt takes precedence over the LAB ™.....

edit... and yeah, that is very reasonably priced for a Wilton!

you can tell I was bored this morn.... :haha:

me thinks I'm gonna need to call Kert for a few more mounts.... just a bit shy on the first order.... :doah:

I should have the alum within 2 weeks or so... VERY anxious to get to that project! :woot:

should REALLY start making it look like something.... than I just need to fill the big holes in the side... :doah:

Looks good, brudda! Is that Mueller primer that you've been using? I've used it on aluminum boat repairs. Really good stuff.

Those vises are nice but only 4". You don't realize how small that is until you go to use it. There is a guy here locally with an "All Terrain" like pictured in brand new condition for $140 on CL. I thought about buying it but 4" is just too small for my taste.

thanks... yeah, it's the Moeller rattle cans.. not as good as a true 2 part zinc wash, but it's a damn good self-etcher.. what makes it vital for alum, also works well on steel...

I'll have to look at the vise down the road obviously.. I like the idea of a receiver hitch one, as I could store it nicely in the under hanging box that's going in front of the tire... but one thing I have to see is how my receiver height will work with that... it may be better for me to actually buy a reasonably sized vise, and build a raised receiver mount to keep it bolted to, to bring it up to a nice usable level..

but that's quite a ways off at this point...

alrighty, down to clean up the trainwreck of a LAB™ and count panel mounts..... :pimp:

You could always make a vise mount from some 2" box and put any size vise on it you want. You could also raise it up where you don't have to be hunched over to use it.

ok, so it looks like I'm gonna need to have Kert make up....

2" flush.. need 5.. guess i'll round that up to 10...

2" centered.. need 44 more :eek1: :doah: :haha: guess i'll round that up to 50...

1.5 flush... I actually want 28, not 24.. need 8, round that up to 10...

1.5 centered... need 2, guess i'll round that up to 6......

expect a pm in a week or 2 bud!!! :o :deal: :haha:
