Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

Was that TW metals paul? Thats where we get our tube from and my boss said its crazy cheap. BTW he said he walks into Fazzios and gets DOM in small quantity fairly frequently. :dunno:

nah, this was one guy with a HUGE shop, surplus... he's closed now... custom steel fabrication was the name..

yeah, Fazio has DOM on occasion, but the selection is very limited... Marmon Keystone is a much more reliable source for it...

this is progressing pretty fast now...Mutt will complete before long...at least the gasoline burning version of Mutt :eek1:

that was 2 solid days working hard finishing off those panels.. gonna see about picking up a gallon of Ryoken red too next week, so I can see about getting the cab back in color prior to bed install...

thanks Mike... :D

I think it should look pretty cool when done and painted...

along with the rest of the countersinks, I've got my piano hinges coming in today for the dropdown doors in front of the drawers... gonna see about getting going on those pretty soon too... at least getting the doors cut out and fitted..

trying to see how much of a deal I can get through work on the latches.. retail is stoopid money.... need 6 of the locking paddle latches I posted earlier, and 4 non-locking.. retail, that's like $475.... :eek1: :pimp:

hopefully I can get the 10 for like $250 though work.... that's 1 locking for each of the 6 compartments, and 4 non-lock for the drawer doors... being wide, they will be best having 2 latches per...

won't have the drawer assemblies for awhile, but I'd like to get the doors situated, as that will hide the big openings down the sides till the drawers show up... which is what you'd be seeing on the road the majority of the time, not the views the above pics show...

I've used sharkskin at work before....

I'm just very hesitant to put a coating on.... I'm not ruling it out... I just want to be certain that's the avenue I want to commit to, after trying "au-natural" for awhile.....

being alum, I can obviously get it back to a prestine, wetsanded look at any time for coating.. and sharkskin would certainly be a excellent choice... :waytogo:

Top coating aluminum is great until its not anymore. Then its hideous and more of a hassle than just rebrightening the aluminum..

On a work surface like that, I would say no bueno.

thanks brudda....

I'm stoked...... light at the end of the tunnel and all that..... :haha:

got the remaining countersinks, and hinges in for the side doors today..

also ordered my latches today.. it'll be 3 weeks till I get them...

ended up doing all locking ones... my minimum order to get our marina price was 10, so I opted for all locking... 2 for each side door, and one for each lower box.. all keyed alike... they are $40 a piece, so $400 total.. :doah:  they retail for $75 a piece.. but it's Southco stuff, so the quality is unmatched..

busy weekend.. no pics tho...

fitted up the exterior, and interior, alum panels on the tubegate... also cut/sized the 4 alum side doors for in front of the drawers...

finish welded all the panel mounts and blasted the joints... tacked in the mounts for the curved panels..

also installed the brakeline down the framerail... just need to put the tank back in and the rig is drivable..

next week I build the 1/2" wide frames for the side folddown doors... than flip it back over and spot prime.. hopefully get the tank in.. also need to sneak in a FULL brake job on my 91 DD'er..

so busy I have no time to get to Fazzio this week, so I have to order 3 6' x 1/2" x 1/8" strip steel from McBible for the side frames..

the plan is to remount the bed in about 3 weeks.. hopefully the back wall will be Ryoken red and the tubebed will be black...

oh, on an equipment note....

finally had to replace the batteries in my Miller Elite helmet.. non digital.. after about 7 yr's... :weld:

I should also be getting a spoolgun in the next week or 2... so some alum ability will be had... :pimp:

Is progress without pics really progress?

If metal gets fabricated but no one on the internet can see it, did it really happen?

existential questions my friend...

lol, it sounds like you're getting a lot done though. :thumb:

:haha:

it's a figment of my imagination... or the bourbon.. not sure.... :pimp:

a tube was cut, but did it make a sound? :dunno:  :haha:

eh, just post work drunk yacking.. more just a documentation of said, stuff...

oh, just went out 1/2 in the bag and installed the fuel tank.... Mutt will go vroooooom vrooooom this week for the first time in about 7 or 8 months...

back to the steel thing.. try moses b glick.. in fleetwood pa.. prolly a little haul for you but thats where i tend to go to get all my sheet steel and squarestock.. $.50 a pound.. plus all types of awesome stuff to pick through.. every time i go i end up staying to closing browsing around

I think you'll be surprised that aluminum really isnt THAT hard to weld. I tig'd aluminum the other day for the first time. It has some quirks but its not that difficult. For instance I like to start away from an edge and back peddle to the edge with the puddle to stop from blowing away the edge, but thats really more of a tig thing. With a spool gun the fill is there from the start. Just remember, aluminum has no indicators when its over heating. Get it too hot from welding multiple intersecting joints and all of the sudden it just melts away.

batteries lasted longer in your elite helmet then in mine. I do like the elite helmet just batteries are not laying around it here in common places .

You mean like its a specialty battery?

Ive had GREAT luck ordering specialty button batteries online from ebay for CHEAP. Like, 50 for the price of one at the store cheap. Who cares if they only last 1/2 as long.
