Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

Also I dig the latches. Here is another reason 2 is better than one. Wind. I built some side boxes out of steel a while back. Put one latch on em. At certain speeds with certain crosswinds the wind would try to open the box. 2 latches solved the problem. That and we put some 1/8 rod around the edges to stiffen up the outer cover

hadn't thought of that...

here's the other one I forgot to mention too.. not that it will happen, but the second gives me that redundancy in case for whatever reason one doesn't "click, latch"...

little gun jumping here, but wait till you guys see the dual bat system I'm designing/ gonna run in this thing.... :eek1: :pimp:

ok, fellas, could use some suggestions.... :ears:

now that the drawers are going in, and I'm gonna be talking to my tank guy in 5 or 6 weeks I'm guessing, I'm trying to finalize/figure out my drawer configs..

originally I was gonna do 2 6 compartment ones, and 2 3 compartment ones... but now I'm thinking of being a bit more diverse and specific to whats gonna go in em..

I'm still thinking of doing the 6 compartment ones like this

100_1600_zps4ea54bb5.jpg

one for hand tools, the other for hardware and small parts..

than I'm gonna do one with 3 long sections

100_1599_zps50140020.jpg

but instead of another 3 section one, I'm actually gonna do one split down the middle.. I have some larger plastic cases that wont fit in the 3 compartment ones..

ANYWAY, where I need input is for the hardware/parts one.... any suggestions on containers for in there for bolts/nuts/screws and such? I'm thinking things that have tops would probably be good and can stack in there side by side and utilize the space well...... like square-lidded plastic Tupperware or something???? :dunno: :haha:

I wanna start looking around at things so maybe I can buy some over the next weeks, so I can modify my dividers exactly if I find a good solution, so everything fit's great...

the drawers are about 5.5" deep.. I'd like to utilize that well.... I have a bunch of these

100_1970_zpswawdsepy.jpg

but they only go up about 2/3 to the top, couldn't stack 2..... ideally 4 smaller ones like this to take up the whole drawer footprint, and deeper would be ideal...

but I'm wide open to suggestion...  :ears:

this will be nuts, bolts, screws, electrical connectors, cotter pins, switches, smaller parts...

obviously it would nice to just have the whole drawer turned into like 4" x 4" cubby's to the top edge, but I'm thinking that may drive the welders nuts and cost a bunch more than a simple 6 or 4 compartment deal.. oh, and if the containers reach near the top, they probably wont needs lids, as the top I'm adding is literally 1/8" above the drawer or less...

Think Velcro, magnets, flux capacitors, not dividers in the original sense.

the hand tool one will have magnet, and foam blocks for each compartment over the top of the tools...

but none of that is gonna help me with hardware.. I could probably just run some of those hangable blue/yellow plastic bins in there... gonna go see what sizes are available..

don't look like those will be good, with the low fronts for access.. plus they are kinda long.. I know the ones we have at work have cheesy plastic dividers you can add, but they suck...

Holy jeebus I swear about a year ago. Probably in this biblical truckfustrofy you've created, there was a similar want/need and it was as simple as fastenal or something. Somebody get on that sh¡t my gray matters only good for stoopid stuff like jeopardy answers.

Go to your local Sporting store or tackle shop and look at Plano boxes. They're a lot like the divided box you posted but their dividers are moveable. They come in all different sizes and shapes to accommodate different lures, plastic baits, etc. I use a bunch of them in the wood shop to hold pen bushings, drill bits. . .

Bring some tools and/or hardware you'd expect to put in them to get sizing. They have lines for other stuff that may be adaptable, too. Ie, their fishing line spool boxes look like they've be good for holding spools of wire. They have waterproof models, tool boxes, gun boxes.

hmmm, yeah, I fish, shoulda thought of that.. I go peaky...... :waytogo:

I was actually just now looking at tap plastics to see if they had any square acrylic ones with open tops.... stuff like this, but they didn't have em I don't think...

thanks.. wow, that's a good height.. I'll have to keep it in mind.. they close, so that's a plus too..

I like the idea of using a bunch of random-sized Plano boxes to mix-and-match a combination that works for the things you carry. It probably makes sense to avoid welding in dividers right away. It will probably take some time to figure out the exact amount and quantity of parts, and which Plano boxes will work best... So you probably want to get that all dialed-in before building permanent compartments.

I'd try to avoid the harder plastic type. They are brittle, especially in the cold, and would be prone to cracking/ breaking after bouncing around in those boxes. I'd try to stick w/ the more flexible type of plastics, think tupperware. You could also check your local dollar store. The ones by me have a pretty good assortment of plastic kitchen containers and they're cheap compared to name brands. I recently bought a bunch for the pantry that are perfect for holding bags of flour and sugar.

Why not just buy some flat bar of the appropriate width for your drawer depth, and then cut slots in them to make your own dividers. No need to even weld them.

No need to cut that many slots, that was just the first image I found.

Why not just

cuz I didn't think of that? :dunno: :haha:

I like that idea, thanks... :waytogo: might work good for the hardware drawer, and changable down the road by just adding some more slots here or there..

I'll keep it in mind when I go pick up more alum for the other projects.. thinking maybe that idea combined with some Tupperware type containers might work very well, and be flexible for down the road..

gonna hit the dollar stores this weekend and look around for possible containers..

looking forward to a couple productive days in the LAB™ this weekend.. I have ZERO plans other than trying to get out for a round of goof one day out of the 3..

hopefully I can bang out the other 2 drawer assemblies... the last one wont get done till after the new fuel tank goes in... my temp gas fill is in the way in the ps front drawer spot...

oh, and my apologies for being a smartarse, I just have a real problem with that phrase..

with that above slotted method I could make 36 4.25" x 4.25" cubby holes.. it would require a 4' x 26" piece of 1/8's...

that could work well for me... I need a bit more 1/8 for the front corners.. so i'd get a 4' x 4' of 1/8".. and a 4' x 8' of 1/4" for the lower boxes and doghouse..

I also need 4 28" x 28" pieces of 3/16 for the "tops" to the drawers.. but I'm thinking I may just have the tank guy supply them for the job since he's gonna weld em on..... that sizing doesn't fit well to cut out of 4' x 8' sheets for me...
