Ryoken's 89 Crew Cab Tubebed build... aka Mutt....

I'm of the option #1 crowd, I like it spaced back the 1/2"

well, technically that's centered, so more like 1.5" back.. i'll do a 1/2" all around tomorrow for comparison...

after my last post, I'm gonna post a pic tomorrow of 1/2" space on top, and right... I'm kinda thinking that might be a good look..
That is what I was thinking would look good. Have to see a pic to be sure of course.

Just to satisfy my curiousity, how big of a pita is it going to be having to reach over the flat area to fill it? Seems like you'd be dripping fuel and such.

outstanding question! :waytogo:

ummm, not super horrible.. ;) I'm 6'.. on my toes I can easily reach in to do the cap.. handle pumping is much easier, flatfooted... I feel it's inconvenience worth the stretch.. even if I need a MANLY stepstool!!! :woot:  :doah: :haha:

feed slope, hose angle is critical IMO.. the hose/fill need to drop a minimum of 2" below the bottom of the fill hose to ensure nice fueling shutoff, etc.....

I'm also doing a slight downward angle to the recessed boxes so the fills are at a 3 to 5 degree down angle for an initial gravity aid...

here's a bourbon-infested shot of 1/2" exposed.... excuse da blur... ;)

Either way the space looks good be it 1.5 or .5" with the fuel door not being perfectly square with on the corners like the doghouse it looks good with that bit of room atleast in my opinion

Are those allen screws real mounting screws or just visual? If they're mounting screws, will there be room on the backside for nuts or whatever you're going to fasten it with?

Josh

they are visual.. shallow tapped. there are 4 #10 studs that come out at the corners that go thru the 1/4" alum... thus why it's kinda "stood off" in the photos....

I'm leaning toward option 3 at this point...

so it shall be...

anxious to do these fill boxes and top... all the hardware/gasket material is ordered.. should have the gas fills and all by fri...

gonna be a long weekend in the LAB™! :woot:

I guess with 60+ gallons at least you won't have to do it often. :waytogo:

You could also fab up some sort of flip out step that came out of the lower boxes if it really came down to that. I bet you could come up with something really trick.

hmmm, interesting... it's certainly something that could be done with the tube/panel build method I use... it will have a recess under the bottom panel..

#104 on the priority list.... considering I can easily just climb in the bed to comfortably fuel, worst case... the back tubegate step works awesome..

Yeah, I would imagine this would only be something you'd consider after you're fueling up regularly to know if you'd ever want or need it.

with 60 gallons you may also end up fabricating a fold out chair and a book rest:haha: almost have to take a chair and book just filling my 40 gallon burb:doah:

somehow I don't picture you with a novel in your hand real often though:thinking:

I can use them to stand on!! :woot: :dunno: :doah: :haha:

I'll be going from a single 20 gal saddle, to triple that... :woot:

that'll get some weight on those tires....
